pt. 2 Gallery is pleased to present A Series of Meditations on the Complexities of Life, a solo exhibition of new work by Wardell McNeal. In McNeal’s first exhibition with the gallery, the painter expands his distinctive form of stylized figurative painting. The paintings exhibited represent a journey in the artist’s spiritual growth through knowledge and discovery and in formal properties of texture, color and perspective. The predominantly blue faces that exist within McNe...al’s canvases have a distinct human feel, despite their relative uncertainty, both in the paradoxical world they inhabit and their startling lack of verisimilitude. Some faces lack eyes, while others hide behind masks. At times, it is unclear when the face ends and the space begins. McNeal’s background as an industrial designer informs the complex worlds his figures belong in - worlds full of shifted perspective, staircases to nowhere, and visual representations of various chakra, emotional states, and even philosophical musings. The colorful lexicon that makes up McNeal’s diverse faces demonstrates an openness between race and identity. Despite certain visual cues that may lead the viewer to see these figures as belonging to a certain race, the stylized skin tone removes them from the stereotypical boundaries set apart by the societal expectations of said skin tone. Removed from reality, the body disassociates from reality in McNeal’s paintings, creating space for philosophical musing, space to emote, and time to seek answers to the unknown. pt. 2 Gallery is pleased to announce Sweeping, a solo exhibition of new paintings by the San Francisco based painter Rachel Kaye. Sweeping is Kaye’s first exhibition with the gallery. Known for her experimentation in color and texture, Kaye’s newest paintings explore the formal elements of shape and color on a large scale. Kaye’s meditative paintings balance a soothing sensitivity to color with a careful investigation into shapes. Her abstract compositions resist even the mos...t pareidolic of impulse, even if their original form was once inspired by natural elements. In countless nuanced moments across Kaye’s paintings, hard edges meet soft textures. Working with water-based oils in thick, quick brushstrokes, her warm pastel tones echo the serenity and peace of a quiet, reflective space. While from afar the transitions from soft green to deep violet, or from mauve to cerulean blue may seem sudden, the interplay and overlap up close gently reminds the viewer that a painting is in fact, a product of the artist’s heart, mind, and hand. The softly wavering edges bring tones together in a gentle embrace, the soft push and pull of tall grass in the wind. pt.2 Gallery is pleased to announce Poetry, After all, a solo exhibition of new paintings by San Francisco based artist Chelsea Ryoko Wong. For her first exhibition with the gallery, Wong presents scenes of social interaction and peaceful meditation through the use of vivid colors and layered compositions. In the painting Work All Day, Warm Beach at Night small groups of people rest scattered across a beach, an homage to the coastlines of San Francisco and Marin. Nestled in s...mall groups across the sand, figures sit playfully amongst themselves enjoying the apparent warmth of a brilliant sunset. These small groups of people represent a social shift in Wong’s life, the openness of the outdoors paradoxically becoming the safest venue even for the most intimate of friends. As such, the bodies occupy drastically less space than Wong’s most well-known paintings, where closely knit people overlap and dance while occupying most of the picture plane. In Work All Day, Warm Beach at Night, the horizon splits the composition- the figures limited to the beach itself on the lower half of the canvas; the upper half, a blue to purple ombre accented by a moonrise. This divide hints at an extended exploration of space in Wong’s painting, both in the embrace of negative space and the acceptance of linear perspective.
