Pacific Shore Maps 30.11.2020

A rare Spanish language route map and guidebook published by Pan American & Grace Airways Inc (WorldCat lists only one other copy, located at the National Museum of Peru). The booklet has 3 foldout map pages with one printed verso for a total of 4 maps. Each foldout is approx. 5 x 20 inches. There is a double page (7 x 7) frontis map showing worldwide routes with caption Ahora Si, El Mundo es Chico (Yes, now the World is smaller). Descriptive text and a Notas de Viaje page round out the booklet. The cover picture is a DC-2 while inside is a small drawing of a Sikorsky S-42 flying boat, the pre-cursor to the famed Clippers.

Pacific Arena. A FORTUNE Map. Orthographic Series II Harrison, Richard Edes 1942; New York City (publisher: TIME Magazine) Pacific Arena - A Fortune Map Orthographic Series II 21 x 26 inches; offset press... Centered on the vast Pacific, some measure due north west of the Hawaiian islands, this map looks at the frontier of the war in the Pacific theatre. Color distinguishes the allies and axis, as well as regional borders. Details the many islands that will become the battlegrounds in the years to come, and includes some air routes from major destinations. Richard Edes Harrison's innovative maps of the 1940s are critical to the history of American cartography. His techniques defied convention and created a new standard for the look and shape of the world on a map. Harrison designed the maps to be both visually appealing and politically charged, reflecting the urgency of the war while also maintaining an elegant artistic dimension. He is, perhaps, the earliest African American cartographer to gain widespread recognition See more

U.S.N. Ships-Bases-Men Harrison, Richard Edes 1938; New York City FORTUNE magazine, March 1938 13 .5 x 22.5, full color offset press... VG+, v centerfold, as issued An early more traditional style map by Harrison. Outlined here is the Navy’s worldwide presence in the years preceding WW II. Of note is the relative weakness of the Asiatic Fleet compared with the Atlantic (though 3 of the 4 Aircraft Carriers are with the Pacific Fleet, most of which is based on the West Coast. The Navy has 597 ships, 200 of which were Decommissioned. 252,000 personnel were serving, almost half of which were reserves or civilians. And there were only 1.000 planes, 300 of which were assigned to Carriers. Most interesting was the depiction of a fence in the NW Pacific which, by courtesy separated the maneuvers of the Japanese and American Navies. See more

No information on the airline was found. They were the "Route of the Missionaries" in their words. 11 x 11, offset press

Complete Map of the Airlines K. N. I. L. M., Royal Netherlands Indies Airways 1935 (Undated) 22.75 x 30.5 in (57.785 x 77.47cm) A c.1935 art deco map of the East India archipelago and parts of Southeast Asia drawn for KNILM, or the Royal Netherlands Indies Airways (1928-1942). The map covers from Bangkok to Darwin, Australia, and from Sumatra to New Guinea. The former Dutch East Indies, modern day Indonesia, are highlighted with vivid coloration and vignette illustrations of... the indigenous people, architecture, and wildlife. This map was designed by Jan Wijga, published by NEPON, and commissioned by KNILM. Although unattributed, it was most likely printed by J. A. Luli and Company of Amsterdam-as was mot of Wijga’s other work. The map is undated, but based upon the air-routes depicted, we can assume an approximate date of 1935. Only one state is known. All examples are exceedingly rare, with the only identifiable surviving examples being at the Wolfsonian-Florida International University, and at the Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden.
