Jacob deGrom 94mph Slider, 100mph Fastball, and finished off 85mph Curveball. Love seeing this posted over and over. What I think is funny about it is, all these pitching gurus trying to explain how their way of throwing is going to get you to do the same. EXCUSE ME, WHAT? NEVERMIND the fact that JD is a plus, plus athlete with elite arm speed and elite ability to repeat his delivery. Nevermind the fact that he's 6'4 and built with the frame to maximize said elite arm speed a...nd athleticism. So he's already in a class that 99.9% of you will never reach. Is that a bad thing? NO. Does that mean you probably shouldn't emulate him? MAYBE. Trying to mirror his arm stroke or his pitching arsenal might not be the best thing for you when your stuff doesn't mirror his in any way shape or form. His pitches do have above average spin rates, BUT that's not the ONLY reason why they're dirty. They tunnel exceptional, he finishes them at an elite rate, and he commands them in areas of the zone that most pitchers can't. ALL of those are innate abilities that put him in the class of pitchers that very FEW pitchers will ever be in. So, when deciding to build your arsenal and define WHO YOU ARE, you need to first establish what your strengths and weaknesses are and be realistic about where your path is heading! You CAN BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE without being cookie cut to match everyone else. Lots of BAD INFORMATION out there with pitching mechanics. While there ISN'T one single way to throw a baseball, there are a ton of INEFFICIENT ways to go about it. How you use your lower half is one of the BIGGEST ways to LIMIT your ability to maximize your potential to THROW harder. As seen here, Mad Max talks about leading with his heel, after loading his backside (our power V), which you'll hear a lot of BAD PITCHING coach's teach AGAINST because they want that toe OPEN a...s you progress down the mound. That's completely wrong! He's explaining how and why he leads with the heel to stay connected to his balance and drive leg. The toe WILL open as you land but you don't lead with it open forcing the hips to swing like an open gate. One piece of the puzzle, but a very important one. WEIRD hearing, one of the games greatest pitcher's of all time, talk about the CHANGE-UP and it sounds exactly like our philosophy on execution & unload. DO NOT PRONATE! I was lucky enough to spend some time picking @45pedromartinez brain in 99 and 2000 while I was with the @redsox and this was the pitch I was floored by his understanding and feel to master considering his mid 90's FB and hammer CB. Throughout my career to that point I had been taught to pronate, to pull the... shade, to do just about freaking EVERYTHING but just throw it like a FASTBALL and let the grip create the differential in velocity. I then spent the next few seasons figuring out a grip that worked and that eventually became the foundation for the CHANGE-UP we teach to our guys now, with GREAT SUCCESS! Now, it's by far my favorite, and one of the easiest pitches to teach.
