Ventilation, an important component of HVAC, is the process of changing or replacing air in any space to control temperature or remove any combination of moisture, odors, smoke, heat, dust, airborne bacteria or carbon dioxide, and to replenish oxygen.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can reduce your home's energy use (and environmental emissions) from 20 to 50 percent if you: add insulation, maintain your furnace efficiently, and keep your heating equipment current with periodic upgrades.

All furnaces use some kind of fuel to produce and move around heat, such as natural gas, fuel oil, or propane. Many systems actually use two types of fuel: one for the heat itself and another to move the heat around (usually electricity).

Furnaces are typically rated using BTUs or watts/kilowatts, both which express the amount of heat energy can produce in an hour. For instance, one BTU is the amount of heat energy needed to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit at sea level.
