In this web conference, we'll hear from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) leaders who are facilitating truth-telling, healing, and transformation at the intersections of racial and gender justice. They will discuss the importance of addressing the historic and present-day legacies of colonization, genocide, slavery, and other forms of structural racism for safety and equity now and into the future.

"Like more than 300 communities across California, El Adobe lacks safe drinking water. Since 2008, the arsenic levels in one of its two wells have regularly exceeded the safety standards set by federal and state authorities, often by more than double. Long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water is linked to diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer."

"Why does the US perform so poorly in these realms? We would argue that a lack of federal oversight and regulation, powerful lobbying structure, deindustrialization of American jobs, and systemic racism combine to create an annual tsunami of excess deaths."

COVID-19 has revealed deep inequities in our society. The fact that millions of people have no paid sick leave at a time when public health officials are urging those who are sick to stay home from work is just one of them. It’s already challenging to cope with this crisis for people who have secure jobs, stable housing, and financial cushions for difficult times. It’s another situation entirely for people who are homeless, or have no health insurance, or depend on school lun...ches to stave off hunger, or are afraid to access services because of their immigration status. "COVID-19 has laid bare the tragic reality that it is bad for your health to be poor in the United States, and it is even worse to be a poor person of color. But why do these preventable and avoidable health inequities along economic and racial lines exist in the first place?"

During the election, they spoke out forcefully about public health, health equity, and racial justice, but what will they do now that they’re in office? That commitment served us well in a year that was defined by political turmoil, a devastating global pandemi...c, and massive resistance to structural racism. At the dawn of a new year, we are proud to present you with highlights of what we accomplished in 2020. Although the complex set of challenges felt unrelenting in many ways, they also underscored for us our core belief in the importance of thriving, equitable communities and renewed our commitment to fight for them. We are so grateful to our many partnersincluding community members, community-based organizations, government agencies, foundations, and public health and health equity organizationswithout whom these accomplishments would not have been possible.
