Hike of the Week - Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail Take advantage of this weekend's break between the storms and set out to explore the 2.7 mile multi-use Anza Trail. The trail commemorates the 1776 journey Spanish military commander de Anza led from Sonora, Mexico to the Golden Gate, where colonial settlers first established the Presidio as a military post.... The Presidio section of the Anza Trail was the first established overland route to San Francisco Bay. In fact, you can begin your hike at Mountain Lake, where members of Anza’s expedition first camped centuries ago. From here, your journey will provide access to some of the Presidio’s most beautiful natural areas and many historic attractions. Click here for a map or more info https://www.presidio.gov//juan-bautista-de-anza-national-h Let us know what you find out on the trail. Tag your posts #PresidioSF and share in the comments below. Twenty years ago, planners in San Francisco's Presidio had a once-in-a-generation opportunity: take a former Army Base in the middle of the second most dense urban area in the country and restore its buried-and-forgotten watershed. Today, the project is nearly complete, with the newest section, Quartermaster Reach, opening to the public in December. How did they do it?... On Jan 7 at 7:30pm for a free Zoom webinar with @CNPS and Presidio Trust ecologist and Associate Director of Natural Resources Lew Stringer about the ideas, challenges, and successes of the restoration of the Tennessee Hollow Watershed in the heart of the city. Today is one of our most favorite days of the year - National Bird Day! National Bird Day celebrates the broad variety of bird species, including the 850 species that inhabit the United States. Birds have always held a spot of fascination, love, and adoration in our hearts. Unfortunately, most birds are either endangered or protected, this is mostly due to habitat loss or illegal pet trade. Birds are often considered living links to the past, being the closest-related anima...ls to the evolution of dinosaurs. They’re often keystone species in the ecosystems, signifiers of its health and vitality. A few ways to celebrate National Bird Day 1. Study some birds - pick up a birding book like the Sibley Guide to Birds 2. Watch some birds 3. Adopt a bird Photo of a Townsend's Warbler taken by local birding enthusiast and photographer Lester Lum at Mountain Lake Park "While not in the same league as Mr. John Murnane, I have a few photographs of birds. It was through Mr. Murnane's photos of the American Redstart in your email newsletter, that inspired me to visit Mountain Lake Park to see this migrating bird. I did finally meet Mr. Murnane at Mountain Lake holding his camera one afternoon. He explained to me in detail about his exciting American Redstart sighting. With his encouragement, I began visiting the park regularly, and thence began my foray into "birding". However, it became a debate to either enjoy the "fleeting moment" by viewing birds with binoculars, or enjoy the efforts of photographing the birds to enjoy after-the-fact. Here are a few of my results from the latter." Thank Mr. Lum for sharing your love of birds with us! And don't forget to share your own images of plants and animals you see in the park via the iNaturalist app.

Tunnel Tops continues to take shape! Last week, elements were delivered for the Outpost, the two-acre play area for kids. The Fallen Tree is a wonderful symbol of hope at such a difficult time, Greg Moore from the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy said. I’m hopeful that its installation foretells a renewed purpose for our parks, our cities, and our country where communities of all backgrounds, generations of all ages, and nature in all its forms can flourish, uni...fy, and give equal opportunity, benefits, and rights to everyone. About the Tunnel Tops: The Presidio Tunnel Tops bridges over the newly tunneled Presidio Parkway (formerly Doyle Drive), which for years has separated the historic Main Post from the highly popular waterfront below, including Crissy Field and Crissy Marsh. The Tunnel Tops project reconnects the city to the bay. Through a series of connecting pathways, bluff landscapes, dynamic overlooks, and social gathering places, the Tunnel Tops is set to become a central place to meet and learn, to experience, to enjoy, and to forge new forms of community and events. You'll get close to nature, get your pulse moving, and may even drop a pound or two. Don't forget to stop for a rest at a scenic overlook. The Army always took its holiday feasts very seriously. Here are members of the 16th Infantry at the Presidio tucking into their share of the 8,000 pounds of turkey distributed to 4,000 soldiers at Bay Area posts in 1913. They then spent the afternoon playing baseball. This holiday season we hope you found joy in the simple pleasures of a good meal and quality time with those closest to you. Start 2021 off with a scenic 2-mile hike through the Tennessee Hollow Watershed in the Presidio. The Tennessee Hollow Watershed is not so much a place as an experience or rather a collection of experiences. It begins with springs near the Presidio Gate; the waters then flow north through three creeks before disappearing into Crissy Marsh and San Francisco Bay. This beautiful valley features residential neighborhoods, endangered native plants, forests, trails, playing fiel...ds, public art, and historic treasures. A trail walk here showcases so much of what is wonderful about the Presidio. Download the map here https://bit.ly/3rjyrDP We'd love to see your photos from the trail. And for the first time, visitors can use this new section of the Tennessee Hollow Trail to walk from Crissy Field’s East Beach, through Quartermaster Reach, under the Presidio Parkway, and along the 1.2 route tracing the watershed’s springs to their origin near Inspiration Point. 2021 already promises even more ...good news! In between the storms this weekend, head out for a ramble through the Tennessee Hollow Watershed, the largest watershed in the Presidio, encompassing 20 percent of the park. It begins with a natural spring, which is eventually fed by two joining creeks. The waters then flow north to Crissy Marsh through a variety of habitats where native plants, birds, and other wildlife thrive, and ultimately join the bay and ocean. For centuries, people have used this creek system as a wat...er source, beginning with the native Ohlone and later Spanish settlers. The U.S. Army substantially altered where and how it flows, pushing its waters underground in many areas in order to build on the land above. The tradition of tree lighting in the Presidio began in 1957 for Army families who lived and worked on the Presidio. It continued when the Presidio opened its gates to all as a public park 25 years ago, and since 1991 the now 55-foot tall Norfolk Island pine has glowed with strings of lights at night beginning the first Friday in December. While we were unable to gather in person this year to celebrate the tree lighting, we hope you can enjoy the beautiful lighted tree on an ...evening stroll in the Presidio. @presidioymca Happy Holidays! https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1036298330203697

National Hispanic Heritage Month continues. When California was part of Spain and later Mexico, many of its leaders had ties to the Presidio of San Francisco. Pictured is General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who commanded the Presidio from 1831 to 1835. He later led the colonization of Sonoma and was named Commandant General of California. After the United States acquired California, he was a delegate to the state constitutional convention and served in the state senate. Tinker, a member of the Osage Nation, who was stationed here as a young infantry captain for a part of World War I. During that time, his wife Madeline gave birth to their second child at Letterman General Hospital. In World War II, he became the first Native American major general in the U.S. Army. On this day in 1951, the Army dedicated a new flagpole at the Presidio to replace the old one, worn with corrosion. Manufactured by Hawley Industries of South San Francisco and standing 105 feet above the ground, it was then the tallest flagpole in San Francisco. Maj. Gen. Milton B. Halsey, deputy commanding general of the U.S. Sixth Army, gave the dedicatory speech in the afternoon. That day, the Presidio also observed the birthday of General of the Armies John J. Pershing, who led the U.S. Army to victory in World War One.
