More than 170 people in Del Rey received COVID vaccines last week at another mobile clinic my office helped bring to Mar Vista Gardens. Most of the neighbors r...eceiving vaccines were getting their second doses, which means nearly 200 more people will be fully vaccinated in a few weeks. Thank you to Venice Family Clinic, People Organized for Westside Renewal (POWER) and all who helped coordinate yesterday’s great mobile vaccine clinic! Thank you to the California Coastal Commis...sion for noting that access to housing is part of environmental justice and for enthusiastically supporting VCH’s vision. We’re so excited about this huge win. We hope to break ground by the end of 2021 and bring 40 new units to Venice, half of which will be reserved for transition age youth. We’re taking important steps to curb the predatory forces that contribute to eviction, gentrification, and the loss of affordable housing in Los Angeles. Today,... the City Council voted to approve my proposal to ask the City Attorney to craft an ordinance that would require disclosure of ownership of LLCs that acquire residential properties. In a separate vote, the Council also voted to direct the City Attorney to work on an ordinance that would ban corporate housing in rent-controlled apartment units. During the last recession, we saw a flood of mortgage foreclosures, and hard-working Angelenos lost their homes. LLCs acquired huge amounts of residential property, leading to a destruction of rent-controlled properties and a huge wave of evictions. We are seeing the same thing happening now. It is destructive and contributes to a huge redistribution of wealth away from working-class communities, especially communities of color. We can’t craft good policy solutions without transparency, and the disclosure requirement, like one in place in New York, is an important step. At the same time, valuable apartment stock in LA is being lost to corporations purchasing apartments, evicting people, and renting out units at much higher prices as furnished corporate housing, often for business travelers for under a year. My proposal would require leases for rent-controlled units in Los Angeles to have a minimum lease of one year. There are multiple causes of our affordable housing crisis, and if we do not address the systemic and structural issues that are at work, we will never be able to protect our neighborhoods and provide housing for hard-working Angelenos.We need a series of actions to make sure we have a #HomesGuaranteeLA.
