From page 10 of the diminutive and rare Drinks that Delight with Cinzano Vermouth recipe booklet, comes a classic Martini: One-third Cinzano Dry Vermouth added to... two-thirds gin, stirred with cracked ice and served up, with garnish being the bartender’s choice of a green olive or a twist of lemon peel. Fay orders a champagne cocktail, Johnny orders a beer, things start out rough, and before you know it, Johnny breaks a chair over someone’s head, in Manpower (1941). A pretty solid movie - if you can find it - (this same scene by the way was re-created in 1991’s Bugsy) and... I have to chuckle when the manager tells Johnny the tab for the drinks: a whole $2. I can't get enough of the beautiful new (albeit old) Fred Harvey Restaurant in Union Station that is now the Imperial Western Brewing Co. and the Streamliner Bar, so I dug up a color linen postcard and a black-and-white photo from the 1940s of the place. Both the postcard and the photo show the interior of what is now @imperialwestern, with the side entrance to the @thestreamlinerbar visible at the left. ... The interior was designed by architect #MaryColter in 1939 using Southwest and Navajo designs in an art deco style and rhe result is terrific. If you go during the grand opening this weekend to check it out, I recommend the Old Fashioned. And the $1 oysters! #WhiskeyWednesday! In case you missed it, here is the bottle of the Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 that sold last week for $1.1M in Edinburgh, making it the most expensive bottle of Scotch whisky and whiskey in general in the world. Experts describe it as the holy grail of whiskies, because of the combination of its rarity, vintage and the unique artwork of the bottle’s label. The Scotch itself was maturing in a vat for 60 years from 1926, then bottled in 1986 in a limited... edition of 24 bottles. Macallan commissioned pop artists #PeterBlake and #ValerioAdami to design custom labels for the bottles, with 12 bottles wrapped in an Adami design, and 12 in a Blake design (thus the whisky’s name). Besides all that, this particular bottle came in a specially-commissioned wood-and-glass tantalus. Its previous owner bought it direct from the Macallan distillery for an undisclosed sum in 1994. Of the 12 bottles of Adami label, it is not known how many of them still exist. Another bottle of the Adami 1926 was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong in May this year for a then world record $1,059,249. Story has it that at least one was destroyed in an earthquake in Japan in 2011, and it is believed that at least one of them has been opened and drank., which of course, is what Scotch was made for. Until I come up with a million dollars to spend on a single bottle, I’ll be sticking with the Macallan 12 year Double Cask which goes for about $48 at @MissionLiquor, making it 20% of the vintage of the Adami but at only .004% of the price. #ThrowbackThursday Here's something you don't see often: a cocktail made with both Scotch and rum, specifically Jamaican rum, with an orange juice mixer but garnished with a lemon. Crazy. From the 1930 book "Cocktails" by "Jimmy," the unsurnamed bartender who worked at Ciro's in London during the American Prohibition. Jamaican rum - usually golden or dark - was a lot more popular when this book was written, today most bars push Puerto Rican rum. The 1934 cocktail guide "Botto...ms Up" by J.R. Meyer lists this drink specifying "Bacardi" for the rum, which, at that time, would have meant white rum from Cuba. No idea why the drink is called Plinius, but it should not be confused with a very different, newer drink called Plinius Maior. Will try this concoction tonight and throw a pic up for you. Irish Whiskey, that is - here we have a pour of "the legendary" Tullamore Dew, originally produced in Tullamore in 1829, then Midleton from 1954, and back to Tullamore around 2014 (although some is still made at Midleton). Hey, as long as Irish whiskey is made in Ireland, that's all that really matters. In addition to the blended shown here, these wonderful guys also make a 10-year-old single malt and a 12-year-old Special Reserve.
