Yesterday afternoon I interviewed Oscar Leal who helps operate this small but very nice gallery in Downtown Pomona located in the beautiful historic city of Pom...ona, California #thirdstreetgallery featuring #Localartists in #pomona and surrounding cities. Oscar reached out to me last month - he and his business partner need the communities help by raising money through donations. As you can see in the photos below, several local artists have their work on display. The gallery is open every 2nd Saturday and would to have you drop by. #supportinglocalartists #downtownpomona Oscar will be featured in our March 25th issue. Please also check out his Instagram page. It's mentioned in the video I posted.

Since 2014, AMOCA in Downtown Pomona has hosted an annual juried exhibition showcasing the remarkable talents of high school students studying the ceramic arts. This year more than ever, we believe students deserve to be honored for making work, and teachers deserve to be honored for educating those students despite the difficult circumstances of distance learning. That is why, for the first time, we will be expanding the annual High School Ceramics Exhibition to include teachers and students from anywhere in the country (the miracles of technology!). On Friday mornings, Jackson's class does show and tell. Today he shared this book we just ordered, titled "There is No Name for Art: The Art of Tewa Pueblo Chil...dren". Jackson's great grandmother lived on the Tewa Pueblo named San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico as a young woman before eventually moving to California. There is a great legacy of artists from her Pueblo including Maria Montoya Martinez and Gilbert Atencio (both of which we are related to). Jackson explained to his class the reason there is no word for Art is because drawing, pottery, sculpture, dance were just a regular part of their lives. He also asked the class to guess if the artwork in the book was from adults or children because he was so impressed at the children's artwork in the book. I think about the relationship of Art with culture, beliefs, work, and even basic needs. For so long, we've considered Art a separate discipline or experience, but understanding how closely the expression of life is with the living of life brings so much clarity to what we are wanting to accomplish with Art in our community.

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Graciela Nardi in her fight with cancer. She was an Artist, Teacher, Founder/Director of The Latino Art Museum and a loving Mother. She is best known for her vibrant and positive energy as well as spending her lifetime helping others achieve dreams and better their lives through community activism, creating opportunities and acts of kindness. Graciela founded the Latino Art Museum 17 years ago in the Pomona Arts Colony and many of her peers would say she is an inspiring example of an immigrant who created a legacy that impacted her community through hard work and dedication. You will be dearly missed. Rest in peace...

Fr. Bill Moore, SS.CC. It is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of our friend, mentor, and artist priest, Fr. Bill Moore. His battle with cancer has ...finally concluded, and he is now with his Lord God. He fought this scourge for several years, with the greatest of dignity and grace, and with the understanding that it was now his time. During this period, he once told me, I’ve lived the most wonderful life--I believe I’ve done what I was meant to do. In addition, his order must have recognized this; they encouraged and guided him to paint as a priest. I know I speak for all who have known him and consider him a friend and mentor. Our hearts are broken at this loss yet overjoyed at the prospect of his crossing over and painting on the other side. On a personal note, my heart aches with the loss of my dear friend; at times, I have been overwhelmed with melancholy and fight the onset of a depression that I had no idea was in me. The love, patience, and understanding of my wonderful wife have helped me navigate this dark maze. I have concluded that he will always be with us in spirit rather than flesh. One of his God-given talents was his ability to listen, without judgment, at times without comment, so, when I feel the need, I will speak to him, I genuinely think he will be listening. George

"Father Bill Moore has been producing sought-after canvases from studios in the Pomona Arts Colony, San Dimas or Claremont for more than two decades. His abstract paintings, which are rarely religious in nature, command thousands of dollars. And now, Moore is in his last days. Cancer has spread to his liver and colon. His latest gallery show, which opened Sept. 12, is his public farewell. His private farewells are already taking place." READ MORE of this beautiful article by David Allen.

It was such a beautiful evening last night at the Pomona Art Walk visiting with Father Bill Moore at the Progress Gallery. This is likely his last show. We met ...him almost 10 years ago when we were about to move into the Arts Colony. I still remember that day in his studio vividly, as he showed us his paintings and the series he was currently working on for the American Heart Association. He is a very special man and a truly beautiful artist. The kids decided to purchase a couple original paintings with their own birthday savings (which means Paw Patrol toys and Harry Styles vinyl were sacrificed). You can learn more about Father Bill Moore and his foundation at https://fatherbill.art/ See more

At last night's Cultural Arts Commission meeting, we approved a Action Plan which included language of specific inclusivity for our Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) artist communities which will create a BIPOC Stakeholders List to connect with for upcoming RFPs. It also includes language ensuring that newly approved Investment Priority List represents at least a 50% in-lieu fund commitment to directly supporting youth-based art projects and initiatives. We also appr...oved establishing a Paint a Utility Box Program and working with Public Works to create a list of city owned boxes. And we discussed opportunities for in-lieu fund investments in local artists to support projects permitted through Activate Pomona, including a painting opportunity for concrete K-rails we may be utilizing for outdoor placemaking throughout the city during the pandemic being provided through funding from the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments. We approved an equitable Investment Priority List which includes public art be distributed equitably in all 6 Districts, including Parks, Public Corridors & Gateways, and Neighborhood Improvement. Thank you staff and Commissioners for all your hard work. This has been a truly productive time.

So extremely grateful for District 2 Cultural Arts Commissioner Jovani Esparza (The Alley Gallery) and District 2 Councilmember Victor Preciado for bringing "31 Flavors" to Pomona on the corner of Main & 2nd. It's not just about beautifying the Downtown, it's about giving artists a voice no matter what District or area they are from. Pomona has a story to share; a story of hope, determination, self-love, healing, survival, and new birth. Her story is being told in part throug...h public art. If you haven't seen the artwork, visit them and take a moment to let them connect with you. "Expression has always been there but this is about giving Pomona its voice back, letting people know that we have art here, letting people know that we have beautiful things here not just crime and violence, Esparza said. We want to bring color to the streets and let our art do the talking. Hint: you can also view them from your vehicle, if that's your preference. https://www.dailybulletin.com//31-artists-come-together-i/ The Alley Gallery Councilmember Victor Preciado Downtown Pomona City of Pomona - City Hall
