I love that ballot drop boxes will be added to Metro stations. VOTE!
If you want to know why Breeze Bike Share is ending in Santa Monica, watch this video. Part of this reason is that the City is now in partnership with Lyft. I'll be curious to see how many of your rights you'll have to give up if you are injured on their bikes, including giving up your right to a jury trial because of forced arbitration.
Hint: a bicycle is involved. https://www.vanityfair.com//how-gabby-giffords-survived-a-
The Santa Clarita Sheriff tweet doesn't say, but I'd bet the person they stopped for lighting infractions was a person of color. We know that cyclists of color are stopped way more often than anyone else. #MobilityJustice https://twitter.com/SCVSHERIFF/status/1309299390478131202
"How streets are converted matters as much as, if not more so, than the conversions themselves." The article also talks about the lack of equity in streets that are chosen to be closed. Thought-provoking article.
Good news: "Caltrans announced today that the state will receive more than $493 million in additional transportation funding from the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) annual August redistribution." https://dot.ca.gov/news-releases/news-release-2020-026
From Streets Are For All: "Yesterday, we found out that Paul Koretz is killing Uplift Melrose. Over the past month, along with many others, I worked tirelessly to make this project happen. In the end, we built a coalition that included hundreds of residents that live just off of and on Melrose, nearly every business along Melrose, both schools on Melrose, a ton of religious institutions, and BOTH neighborhood councils in the impacted area. It’s nearly impossible to get all of those groups to agree on anything! And the $50M project would have been built with free money from the state."
"Dean said he did not know what vehicle code Kizzee was suspected of violating. He told reporters on Monday: It is not uncommon for deputies to conduct vehicle stops of bicycles. They have to adhere to the same rules of the road as a vehicle does.
"Biking is on the rise in the United States, and Americans of color represent one of the fastest-growing segments. However, Black and Brown cyclists say they continue to struggle for acceptance in the cycling world. Black and Hispanic cyclists are more likely to be ticketed while riding and have a greater likelihood of being harassed by police or being assaulted, experts say, while their communities are more likely to lack bike infrastructure found in White and affluent neighborhoods."
