Welcome to Plume: Accessories in Flight Plume is a small labor of love jewelry company that offers handmade feather accessories developed by an animal lover, for animal lovers! ... I've always been an admirer of feathers and their unique beauty, but being someone who deeply cares about animal rights, I have never felt comfortable buying products adorned with feathers. It's hard to trust where feathers come from these days. There are entire industries dedicated to the mass production of feathers for the beauty industry, and with that comes unethical factory farming practices. These industrialized farms are often over crowded and pluck feathers from live birds to increase production yields. Live plunking is a painful and abusive act that would break any animal lovers heart to witness, while overcrowding causes excess stress and unhealthy living conditions. Unfortunately, the feather industry often hides behind deceiving terminology like "all natural", and "cage free" that trick the consumer into thinking their products are ethical. To solve this problem, I decided to take matters into my own hands! At Plume, I source feathers from two single family small organic farms, one eco-village practicing poultry permaculture, and one duck preserve. My standards for choosing these farms included: Birds must be pasture raised, living their lives outdoors in nature (only cooped at night for safety from predators) Birds are living in small groups and never over crowded Feathers are never plucked from living birds (the majority are collected after the birds naturally molt, while some are removed from the birds after the end of their happy lives) Feathers must be gently washed for the consumer's safety Proceeds from feather profits go back into caring for the birds I took my time when choosing the farms I buys from, and each one meets these standards. I want my customers to know that when they buy accessories from Plume, they can feel confident and beautiful, while knowing they helped support the lives of happy birds and healthy farms! Big things are happening for my little business! For the rest of May, I'll be making preparations to have some of my products on the shelves of a real life brick and mortar! Its been a goal of mine to have my products in stores, but I had no clue how to even start trying to accomplish that goal. ... They say the universe works in mysterious ways, and that if you let go and trust in the cosmos, they will provide. Well, it just so turns out that an old friend of mine is about to open a doggie boutique in a few weeks. (So cute right ) One of her goals for her store, is to promote other local businesses by giving them a place to show off and sell their products. What a sweetheart! And so for the month of June, she is allowing me to set up shop in a little corner of her store! Im so blown away! I feel so blessed and grateful for this opportunity There's so much prep to be done! There's crafting inventory, buying or making product displays, inventory spread sheets, marketing materials to create... Yikes Its a lot, but im so excited for this new challenge! BIG NEWS! Hey chickadees! I've got some really cool things coming your way starting in March!... So for months now I've been on the search for an ethical source for harm free, naturally molted parrot feathers. And let me tell you, it hasn't been easy. The topic of "harm free" feathers can be a bit controversial, and sometimes people have different ideas of what harm free looks like. Are feathers harm free if they came from birds that were hunted on controlled hunting grounds? (Nope) Are feathers harm free if they came from endangered species? (Oh heck no!) What about feathers collected at pet shops? (Not in my book) These are questions that can have complicated answers. But, for me, I consider harm free feathers to be feathers that were collected when a bird naturally molts them, or if the feathers were collected as a holistic practice after a bird's natural life cycle comes to an end. With that being said, it's not easy to find feather sources that meet my ethics standards. BUUUUUUUT (drum roll) I finally found an etsy shop sourcing naturally molted, colorful feathers from parrots and other brightly colored domesticated birds! And of course, like I do with all of my feather sources, I spoke with the shop owner in detail about her feathers to ensure they meet my criteria. Her feathers come from birds in the US living in their forever homes with their loving families. And their families gather the colorful feathers as feathers naturally fall off.
