The events of the last few months have placed us all in an unprecedented situation. The impact of this insidious pandemic is indiscriminate and far-reaching. Many aspects of our lives our health, our families, our jobs, our neighborhoods have been disrupted with no end in sight. We at Plaza Community Services want to extend our deepest sympathies to those whose health and wellbeing have been upended by the Covid-19 outbreak.... And then we all witnessed the murder of George Floyd and the tragic events that have unfolded in front of us during these past weeks. Events that have brought us front and center with societal inequities and the struggle for justice that is old as our country itself. The Board and Staff want to make a few things very clear to both our Plaza families and those whose communities do not yet benefit from our presence: Plaza Community Services is here to serve and support you in every way we possibly can! We have been around for over 100 years and have seen many changes to our Los Angeles community. For those of you who don’t know, we take our name from the Plaza Olvera, which emanated from the 44 individuals that transformed for better or worse - the Tongva village of Yangna into the city that we share today. Along with Spanish citizens, included among this founding group were Africans, Native Americans and Mestizos. Their descendants would become and continue to be the Plaza families that we serve today. Unfortunately, since the time of our founding, some things remain all too familiar: unequal educational and economic opportunities, an unjust legal system, and unequal protection under the law are just a few of these stubbornly endemic and all too accepted shortcomings in our society. Over our history, we have endeavored to respond to as many of these societal failures as we could address. Indeed, scores of families have benefitted from our programming. Unfortunately, it has simply not been enough to impact the larger issues of justice and fairness. This will change. Plaza Community Services rededicates itself to what it does best strengthening families through early childhood education and family support services and expand its services into the areas that need our collective attention in this important time in our country’s history. Please come back to this site often to follow the new programs we will implement over the coming months.
