What Happens if You Keep Running With a Cramp? Cramps while running can be painful. Depending on what type of cramp you are experiencing, running through the cramp will have different effects. Muscle cramps will not ease as you run, so you should stop running to avoid damaging the muscle. However, side cramps and stomach cramps won't cause damage and might be alleviated by continuing to run. Leg Cramps... If a muscle in your leg cramps while running, it is usually caused by muscle fatigue, low sodium, low potassium or dehydration. Continuing to run will only make the pain worse. The best solution for muscle cramps is to rest and drink fluids. Sports drinks that refuel electrolytes, including sodium and potassium, can be helpful. Additional Considerations for Leg Cramps If you have the same muscle cramps as soon as you start exercising for several days in a row or the cramp lingers for a day, it could be a sign of overexertion, according to MayoClinic.org. Take a complete break from exercise for several days and allow your body to rest. If you experience swelling, weakness, loss of sensation or extreme soreness you should see a doctor. These could be signs of a condition that require medical treatment. Side Cramps Side cramps, also called a side stitch, are usually the result of shallow breathing. Shallow breathing is when you breath from the top of your lungs, instead of taking deep breaths and breathing with your diaphragm. You can continue to run through a side cramp. Coach Jenny from "Runner's World" magazine instructs, "Slow your pace and exhale as the foot on the opposite side of the stitch strikes the ground," to relieve the pain quickly. Stomach Cramps Stomach cramps while running are usually caused by eating or drinking too much before you run. You can continue to run through these cramps; it might remain painful, but you won't damage your body. In the future, try eating and drinking at least 30 to 60 minutes before exercising. Foods high in fat, fiber or protein take longer to digest, so leave more time before you run if you eat these foods.
