Congratulations to Petty Officer 3rd Class Lauren J. Singer for receiving the USO Sailor of the Year 2020 Petty Officer 3rd Class Lauren J. Singer was traveling over the Coronado Bridge near San Diego, California, returning to her on base residence, when she noticed a stranded motorist outside his vehicle. Singer asked if he needed any help, and the driver responded that he was fine. Something in the manner of the driver’s response triggered her intuition and made her feel t...hat something was not right. She noticed the driver putting a rope around his neck. As he was putting a foot on the barrier to jump over the side, Singer rushed to his side, pulling him back. Startled, she grabbed him and asked what he was doing. He coolly responded by saying that today was the day he was going to die. While Singer was holding the driver, she noticed a knife on the barrier ledge. She cut the rope from around his neck, dropped the knife and kicked it underneath the car. She then identified a gun in his pocket. She removed the firearm and directed other stopped motorists to lock the gun securely in the trunk and call 911. She stayed with the suicidal driver until the California Highway Patrol arrived. Singer’s willingness to assist a stranger undoubtedly resulted in saving his life. Wow! Well done Sailor!!!

Christmas morning six Nashville officers ran into danger as they helped evacuate residents before a large explosion rocked downtown Nashville. According to reports, Nashville police and fire crews responded to shots fired calls in the area of Second Avenue and Commerce Street and noticed a suspicious RV parked outside an AT&T building just before 6 a.m. Officers and witnesses heard a recording from the RV giving a dire warning: Evacuate now. There is a bomb. A bomb is in... this vehicle and will explode." Immediately, without knowing if a bomb would go off or not, these heroes acted quickly and courageously to start evacuating people from nearby buildings. Nashville Mayor stated, "They ran to danger with uncertain outcomes ahead of them; they were responsible for so many innocents being saved." These are the names of the selfless Metro Nashville Police Department heroes who put other people’s lives before their own on Christmas morning. Officer Brenna Hosey, a 4-year veteran; Officer James Luellen, a 3-year veteran; Officer Michael Sipos, a 16-month veteran; Officer Amanda Topping, a 21-month veteran; Officer James Wells, also a 21-month veteran and Sergeant Timothy Miller, who has been with the department for 11 years. These are the faces and the characters of the men and women who put on their uniforms to protect their communities. This is why so many of us became sworn peace officers, to help protect the communities we love. We hope that Nashville finds justice for this terrible act and we thank these officers for their courage. #justiceforNashville

Today marks the six year anniversary of Placer County and Sacramento County losing two heroes in uniform. Deputy Danny Oliver and Detective Michael Davis Jr. lost their lives at the hands of a murderous criminal while trying to protect their communities. Their ultimate sacrifice while serving the public should be honored by all and never forgotten.

*WHAT THE MEDIA WON'T TELL YOU* This last week law enforcement officers were attacked across the country. While the media is covering politicians' assessments of how "we should be shooting people in the leg" there is a serious issue with attacks against our men and women in uniform. In Tennesssee, an officer was attacked during a routine traffic stop, in Georgia an officer was shot after responding to a call, in North Carolina an officer was beaten to critical condition whil...e people just watched and recorded the attack on their phones, three officers were injured in San Francisco due to people "throwing glass bottles, plastic bottles filled with unknown liquid, metal cans and eggs" at them, Seattle PD police officers had their car set on fire while they were still in it, the Portland Police Association was ambushed by rioters, and worst of all two Houston PD officers were shot with one being fatal! *WHAT PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND* These people attacked are more than a uniform. They are someone's husband, sister, mother, son and the list goes on. As people are asking to defund us or cut our salaries there is no denying the strain this profession is putting on the people who have sworn their oath to protect their community. Especially this last year. Our families look at every attack and think about what they would do if it was their loved one. People are still forgetting the human behind the badge. *WHAT POLITICIANS DO NOT UNDERSTAND* By undermining this reality and saying statements like "just shoot people in the leg politicians are fueling the civil unrest against our men and women in uniform. The current silence from politicians and the media while officers are being assaulted at an alarming rate is compliance in this war against law enforcement. This needs to end. ~SHARE~ if you are fed up like we are.

Thursday night a San Bernardino Officer was dispatched to a reported male jumping on top of cars while armed with a gun in a nearby parking lot. The officer arrived within minutes and contacted the suspect. The suspect refused the officer’s commands. The suspect attempted to enter a convenience store which was occupied by multiple bystanders. The officer denied the suspect entrance and a physical scuffle resulted. The officer and the suspect went to the ground when the s...uspect pulled a gun while standing up. The officer created distance and drew his weapon, firing multiple shots at the suspect. The suspect was hit and transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. A 9mm handgun was retrieved from the scene, which was allegedly dropped by the suspect after being shot. The suspect is 35 year old Mark Matthew Bender Jr. of San Bernardino. Bender has an extensive criminal history including arrests for domestic violence, criminal threats, false imprisonment, felon in possession of a firearm, probation and parole violations, receiving stolen property, grand theft, possession of narcotics for sale, and attempted murder. Bender is an ex-felon and is prohibited by law to possess a firearm. Despite the video and facts of the case, protests continue calling for the abolishment of the police... Was this officer involved shooting justified? Answer: Yes.

Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore recently announced city officials are "seriously contemplating" layoffs of hundreds of police officers as part of the effort to close a projected budget deficit. This is bad news. Not only has Los Angeles recently seen a 28% increase in homicides and a 40% increase in shooting victims -- reports show their homeless community have been a target of alot of city violence. Decreasing police presence has its immediate consequences and the d...irect results are staggering. This also comes after LAPD announced cuts to their sexual assault and homeless outreach units. This pattern of de-policing needs to end. Vocal minority mob threatens local community > local officials succumb to the vocal minority > cut police funding > local law enforcement are demoralized and diminished > crimes increase > repeat. How many examples of this insane cycle do we need to recognize this recent social experiment of defunding the police doesn't work? #keepstreetssafe

The male suspect is 20 years old. He allegedly punched a 69-year-old man, who later died. Now the suspect is charged with voluntary manslaughter and his life may never be the same. Whatever lead up to the altercation likely wasn’t worth someone losing their life. We send our condolences to the victim’s family. May due process achieve justice. #justwalkaway

On December 5th, Sheriff Don Barnes of Orange County released the following statement regarding Governor Newsom’s stay-at-home order: 2020 has been a difficult year for all of us in many ways. The pandemic, civil unrest, and fires have affected us all.... Governor Newsom announced new stay-at-home orders for much of California, including Orange County. The ever-changing nature of these orders and the increase of COVID-19 case numbers bring additional uncertainty and stress to California residents. To put the onus on law enforcement to enforce these orders against law-abiding citizens who are already struggling through difficult circumstances, while criticizing law enforcement and taking away tools to do our jobs is contradictory and disingenuous. Compliance with health orders is a matter of personal responsibility and not a matter of law enforcement. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will remain consistent in our approach to the pandemic. Orange County Sheriff’s deputies will not be dispatched to, or respond to, calls for service to enforce compliance with face coverings, social gatherings, or stay-at-home orders only. Deputies will respond to calls for potential criminal behavior and for the protection of life and property. Our actions will remain consistent with all constitutional rights. As we have done throughout this pandemic, we must remain diligent in preventing the spread of the virus by following public health recommendations, like wearing a face covering and practicing social distancing. Conversely, policy makers must not penalize residents for earning a livelihood, safeguarding their mental health, or enjoying freedoms. The month of December is typically a time for celebrating. I know this year is different, but we do not need to cancel the spirit of the season. I encourage you to remake holiday traditions to accommodate public health guidelines, reach out to a neighbor, or help someone in need. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will continue our tradition of participating in charitable efforts for those in need and our commitment to keep you safe during the holidays. ### Thank you Sheriff Barnes for speaking up!

Placer County Deputies 30.08.2020

Sergeant Harold Preston was shot and killed at about 9:30 am as he and other officers responded to a domestic disturbance call in an apartment complex in the 2600 block of Holly Hall Street. Police were called to the scene by a woman who had been locked out of her apartment by her estranged husband and was attempting to retrieve belongings. Other officers had been to the apartment two additional times in the preceding days for domestic disturbance calls. Sergeant Preston and... the other officer spoke to the woman for approximately an hour before her 14-year-old son managed to unlock the apartment door and encountered his father holding a gun. The man then opened fire, striking Sergeant Preston numerous times in the head and upper body. The other officer and juvenile were also wounded. The man surrendered approximately one hour later. Sergeant Preston had served with the Houston Police Department for 41 years and was scheduled to retire in the coming weeks. He is survived by his elderly parents, whom he cared for. -Officer Down Memorial Page Please join us in sending prayers for Harold’s loved ones, his department, and the Houston community he served for 41 years.
