It can help improve behavior and concentration, decrease stress hormones, and boost the immune system. Exercise, like physical therapy, can develop your child's motor skills and coordination, improving lifelong athletic ability. . When life is stressful, it seems difficult to find time for exercise, but it's arguably the most important time to pursue frequent physical activity. Kids are exposed to screen time more than ever before, especially with many taking part in distance learning. While there are definitely some benefits to video phone calls and virtual classrooms, it's good to remember to unplug after the schoolwork is finished. For babies and toddlers under the age of 2, the vast majority of quality learning comes from unstructured play and direct personal interaction. Children learning something directly from a parent has been shown to be mu...ch more successful than a child trying to learn from a tablet. Exposure to screens should be limited to as little as possible. For school-aged children, it is recommended to have no more than 2 hours of extra screen time (outside of schoolwork) every day. For adolescents, in addition to screen time, social media can take a toll on their mental health. Many mental health experts are advocating to keep kids off of social media completely. As a parent, if you decide to allow your child social media privileges, the AACAP put out some guidelines to help keep your child as safe as possible. This past year has been harder than usual for most families. Did you know: there's a movement in the U.S. to start addressing ACEs during routine medical care for children and adults? So - what are ACEs? Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events in childhood, and they are increasingly recognized as contributors to lifelong adult health. A large study from Kaiser and the CDC in the 1990s began to uncover the relationship between ACEs and adult heal...th and wellness. They are common. Most people (61%) report ACEs in their lifetimes, and ACEs are linked with chronic illness, mental illness, and substance use. In childhood, ACEs contribute to toxic (or prolonged) stress of childhood, which is known to affect brain development and such things as attention, decision-making, learning, and response to stress. ACEs can not only be prevented, but investing in good coping mechanisms can lessen the long-term effects. If you feel like your child has been handling more stress than necessary, telehealth may be a good way to discuss options to start the healing process for your child and your family. No stigma.
