This bears repeating for the people in the back. Our current policies stand. I’m not going to be the vaccine police. I don’t have time to micro-manage everyone or check medical info at the door. I also don’t think it’s my place as a fitness studio to demand medical info. This could change- but not right now. Also not sure why people are forgetting that vaccinated people can still get sick and pass it to someone else. My kids and other people I love aren’t vaccinated yet. ... I will not be part of someone’s story, especially when we’ve made it so far staying healthy and safe. I have to make a lot of hard decisions all the time in regards to my business and my family. Sometimes my stomach hurts, my chest gets tight and I have to just exhale and pull the trigger. That’s the challenge of being a mom and a business owner. You do the best with the info you have. I would rather look back and know in my soul, I did the best I could for as many people as possible- then regret not being diligent enough. I also don’t make decisions based off of what will make me more money, like many larger chains or franchises might do. I make decisions from the heart. If you love PHC you will understand this decision to stay masked. It’s because we love you. It’s because we are a community of people who care for each other. 12 years ago- The first call we got from CPS for a potential foster to adopt match was a little person who was born with both male and female reproductive parts. I never doubted that the person who would end up as ours was totally supposed to BE ours. Turns out their foster momma had fallen in love, they were safe with her and that was that. Our next call and the call after we’re for our boys- who are Hispanic/Indian and Black. I didn’t hesitate. I wanted them with m...y whole heart. My husband, whose blood runs with pure kindness and love, of course said yes. I was pretty sure I was going to fuck up as a parent, even if my kids were white and/or straight like me, so I figured I can learn what I don’t know, ask for help and try my hardest to keep them alive no matter who they were. And so far they are both still alive and seem like decent people to me lol. I put my foot in my mouth pretty such every five minutes. I laugh too loud at my own inappropriate jokes. And as I’m saying things I often think You are Fucking Crazy. And I do this with deep topics like gender and race and being a white woman and politics and sexual orientation and people who like chihuahuas and people who drive a Prius and women’s rights and not getting athletes or the point of running and referencing your boobs on accident repeatedly and many other things. But I’m always trying and I’m always loving people as hard as I can. My ears are open and I’m listening, learning and taking steps in my life, especially as a parent. And some things deserve the respect of a Taking A Stand moment: You are welcome in my life, my studio and I am here for you. And I know all my people at PHC feel the same. As an adoptive mother, the weight of the world can feel too heavy to handle sometimes. Especially on days like today. MLK was not revered until he was gone. He was in fact greatly hated by many for his fight for equality and demand for change. So many beautiful powerful black men and women have been taken from this world violently and before their time. We speak their names. We talk about their contributions and the reasons why this is still happening to them today in ...2021. Am I doing enough in my own growth to be able to be there for my brown and black sons to make sure I offer them the best defenses against the forces that will work against them? Am I giving them the strength, knowledge and peace in their spirits to be able to handle what the future holds for them? I know my life has been filled with privilege they are not given. My hope is that as the years pass there will be change and a rebuild in our country to make things easier and more equitable for them. I am not a sideliner. My work starts at home. Being a white mom who hasn’t dealt with hardship they will surely encounter doesn’t make this something I can pretend isn’t real for them. The arc of their existence will be affected by racism and hate. It is my job to prepare them on how to handle this and become the best version of themselves in spite of it. Each day I wake up with the desire to be the change we so desperately need to see. I’m not perfect- but I’m working my ass off to be there for them in the right way. I often think that if the paralyzing fear I have for my boys safety-as they live under the umbrella of my white privilege- is this strong, how the fuck do black moms feel every day? This time of year is hard as we are inundated with lose weight in 30 and it’s time to become your best self bullshit. I used to subscribe to all of this. Growing up in S Ca by Malibu and the land of the taut and tanned, I didn’t really know I had a choice. But now I’m older and with my discovery of Pilates, I can see what my body is capable of and what it does for me- i...n my mind and heart more than my body. I can see my body’s strength, it’s ability to adapt and most importantly the way it absorbs my anxiety and stress so I can function. Don’t forget that YOU AND YOUR BODY ARE ON THE SAME TEAM! It’s you. Handle yourself with grace and love. Treat it like a friend. Move your body because you care about it, not because you aren’t happy with what it looks like. Stop squeezing your fat rolls and looking at yourself in the mirror with loathing. You wouldn’t do this to a friend, why do you do it to yourself? When you look at your body and see the changes in it, tell it you’re doing an amazing job keeping me alive and dealing with my nonsense- I love you. How many years have you spent being hard on it? Maybe this year is the year you decide to try and love it. Feed it. Move it. Let it sleep. Put it in comfy clothes and just let it be. 2021 for me is the year of LOVE. Love for my family, my students, my instructors, my business and for myself- body included. I endeavor to show love as much as possible as my New Years resolution. 2020- A year with more grief than should be felt in 12 months. So much loss of loved ones who shouldn’t be gone so soon. So much why why why did this all have to happen? Also 2020- A year of expanding. Of the heart and mind. A year of discovering new ways to find contentment and a shifting of how things can be done- in both a professional and personal sense. A year of discovering new loves and finding what is really truly deeply important. I have never been a first m...om. I am the second and sometimes even the third. Our sons are adopted through foster care. Our dogs are all rescues. I will never bear a child. I am not the first for anyone. But for me I think the most important mom is the last mom. I am their Last. I will be there for the moments moving forward. I will be there through the rest of it all, if I’m lucky. This week we expanded our hearts to include a new little one. Meet our sweet soft girl- Maple. She had a lonely sad little life before coming to be part of our family. She needed someone to give her the attention she deserves. Some (all) people call me crazy for having so many dogs. How can I lose one and then a couple months later adopt another one? Doesn’t my heart get full or tired of loving someone I know will leave before I am ready? I can’t explain what it is that makes me love them so deeply. I can’t explain how it makes me feel to have them in my arms and the happiness I feel at the daily tasks of caring for them. I find no burden in this work. I only find peace. They make me smile. They give me a warm feeling that makes everything better. So to this I say thanks 2020 for giving me so many ways to offer my love. I think this is the same love that translates into wanting to help people move in a way that makes them feel good. I like to care for others in distinct and tangible ways. I might not ever be a baking or crafting mom, but I’m a solid, love you until it hurts, never turn my back on you mom. This is my office. It’s supposed to be a formal dining room. But we don’t Formal and we don’t Dine. So it’s our Library- full of art supplies and books. It’s sunny, warm and cozy. It’s where beautiful ideas are created. It’s where I load the weekly schedule, book sessions and decide what the future holds. It’s also where I sit- frustrated, angry, making hands tied behind my back changes to how I run PHC. It’s where I disappoint people and worry about my instructor...s. It’s where I’ve cried thinking about the last 5 years of being a studio owner and what 2020 has brought to us. Lately it’s been more crappy than wonderful sitting in this spot. But I still love it.
