Featuring Christopher Burkett’s 20x24 inch original Cibachrome, Early Winter Snowfall, handmade by the artist from 8x10 sheet film. In 2000, my wife Ruth and I found ourselves photographing in Colorado in the Grand Mesa area. Although it was the end of September the aspen trees were just beginning to change color. That night a cold front came in, the temperature fell into the low teens and it gently snowed all through the night. When morning came the storm had passed and t...here was no wind. Everything was still and quiet. The snow had coated the trees in the most perfect way, frosting all of the tips and branches but leaving enough uncoated so the shape and form of every tree is well defined. Because it was a record early snowfall, the stage was set for some uniquely beautiful photographs that combined green and golden aspens with winter blue conifers, all with a light dusting of snow. This scene was photographed with my 800mm Apo-Tele-Xenar lens at 45-1/3 for 1/4 second on Velvia 50 film. I didn’t make the first Cibachrome of this transparency until 2010, 10 years later. It was extremely difficult to make properly, even with some special masking techniques that I invented for this image. The difficulty lies in preserving tonal separation and uniform density throughout the entire group of aspen trees which requires very precise and difficult dodging and burning on each Cibachrome. It is worth the effort and it presents a unique image that reminds me of the old fairy tale stories that I still love to read. It’s the kind of view the heroine sees when she’s nearing the end of her quest to find the golden apple that grows in the midst of the enchanted winter valley. - Christopher Burkett #winteriscoming

Featuring Christopher Burkett’s 30x40 inch original Cibachrome, Graceful Aspen, individually handmade by the artist from 8x10 Provia film for one of our clients in the Bay Area. At the end of September 2005, my wife Ruth and I found ourselves in the Grand Mesa area of Colorado, having spent the previous five days photographing in Idaho and Utah. We were driving down a narrow dirt road when we came around a corner and saw this tree. The lighting was extraordinary and quite ...rare. It was around noon and the aspen trees were perfectly backlit as you can see by the slight edge lighting of the three tree trunks. Behind the aspens was a group of dark fir trees that were tall enough to provide a backdrop but short enough for the sunlight to fully illumine the aspens. I’ve never seen such a perfect setup before or since. Working quickly before the light changed or the wind picked up, we set up the 8x10 camera using a modest amount of the falling front adjustment to keep the trunks parallel in the photograph. There was a puff of wind now and then so we had to watch and wait for a still moment before I used my 600mm lens at f/45 for a 1/4 second exposure onto Provia film. Before we could take the camera down two nice ladies stopped by to see what we were doing and very kindly took our picture which shows the view camera setup and what we looked like in 2005. The Cibachrome was surprisingly difficult to make; it took me three days before I was pleased with it. The difficulty is in keeping tonal separation in the yellow leaves which requires a perfect, rather light density contrast mask combined with a lot of precise dodging and burning. The final Cibachrome has a wonderfully cohesive feel to the cascading gold leaves and fine branches that reminds me of movement of clouds in the sky or the piano music of Jessica Williams. - Christopher Burkett See more

We will never forget... As the World Trade Center buildings burned and collapsed on September 11, 2001, a half million people were evacuated from Lower Manhattan by a civilian flotilla of ferries, tug boats and other vessels in what became the largest boatlift in history. In remembrance, we are featuring Alexey Titarenko’s fiber based gelatin silver photograph, Sail, New York, handmade by the artist from 6x6 format Ilford Delta 100 film on the 10 year anniversary in 2011. Many thanks to all the first responders and civilians who helped save so many lives on that tragic day.

Happy Birthday Christopher Burkett! Burkett (American, b. 1951) has labored for over four decades to create what many regard as the most impeccable and luminous color photographs in the history of photography. After spending nearly a decade in a monastic community, Burkett realized that his ultimate vocation was to present the light that he could see in the world around him to others through the medium of photography. This year we are featuring Cottonwood and Light." Currently on view, and available in our gallery!
