Domestic will be shown through December 19. Reception: Thursday, December 17, from 6:00 to 8:00. DOMESTIC November 19 December 19... Curated by Victoria Mara Heilweil The domestic is often a space relegated to women and the feminine. Here, five female photographers both embrace and push against stereotypes of the domestic. The photographers invite us to examine ideas about time, home, and family. Small details are monumentalized through their investigations with the camera. These often-overlooked details have a visceral quality that is both uncomfortable and seductive. Domestic celebrates everyday moments, reimagining the home as a space of chaotic, imperfect beauty. Elizabeth Bernstein communicates intimacy and vulnerability through day to day possessions, using their essential aspect to create an emotional core to her images. Charlotta Hauksdottir uses several photographs of families in their homes, taken over time and layered into one complex composition to highlight the temporality of being. Victoria Mara Heilweil's photos are an archive of the everyday. She photographs her dirty dishes waiting to be washed to create images that are simultaneously alluring and abject. Kija Lucas highlights our strange intimacy with domestic objects, an intimacy that allows them to take on debris from body and the home and show changes that accrue with time. Mary Parisi creates her photographs as part of the ritual of cooking. Her images are aesthetic, formal abstractions coupled with the jarring discord of the animal being present for consumption. Also Closing December 19 HENRY BOWLES New York Skies Looking up at tall buildings can be a hypnotic experience. They look impossibly tall when one is walking in the street, so full of power and importance yet distant and strange. In New York City where the buildings are so close together, this experience seems to shrink the observer and enlarge the sky. The towers may be made of stone, glass, and steel but in the mind they move and bend like waving blades of grass. What appears transcendent can be as transitory as clouds floating and shifting with the wind.

Barbara Kyne will sign her new book at PHOTO today, 6 -9 pm. By Fire A Photographic Chap Book By Barbara Kyne... By Fire explores the human experience of tragedy that has often been described as a trial by fire. Although Kyne does not stage these images, she senses archetypal moments emerging in front of her and intently renders them. The focus of the images is shallow with the lens barrel focused on the fire, the sparks. The blurred person moves about the fire, protected by an oversized magic coat unbecoming, disintegrating, down to the bone and returning whole, wiser and stronger. "I find that if we move through the metaphorical fire with awareness, we may find that facing mortality creates expansion and renewed life," says Kyne. The images contemplate the ephemeral nature of life and the perseverance of humanity.
