This HORRIBLE story in these articles Below are totally resonating with me in my own way. I was hired as a soloist with the Bayerishe Staatsopera Ballet of Munich in 1994. Even though I was classically trained, I was specifically hired because of my Contemporary Dance quality to be the lead in a new Dance/Opera by choreographer Gwyinnie Sax of London. ... The Ballet Master and the rest of the artistic staff could "barely" tolerate my presence and resented that in order for me to appear in this new project they had to give me a full contract with the company. I was also shorter than the rest with my 5' 4" frame with more of a wrestlers build than a dancer. Ultimately, I didn't finish my first full contract with the company where I felt like an outsider. I took a contract across town in Munich with a state funded well known, established Contemporary Company as a soloist where when during my very first tech week on stage the Director/Choreographer promptly asked me to go tan because my skin was "glowing" under the lights a bit much. I wondered why my German counterparts in the company were not as pale as I anticipated. Ultimately, I refused and stayed with the company for 1.5 more years including becoming the Director's assistant. We must acknowledge and recognize the world as it is and our art MUST CATCH UP.
