When you are offered the opportunity to scan family photos you also sometimes get a little history lesson too. This photo taken in 1920 of Petaluma resident, Steve Thompson, while he was serving in the Army in World War 1. He entered the Army in 1919, but he was born in 1902, which means he entered the service when he was 17 years old. Photo scanned by www.PetalumaPhoto.com
A fond story and memory to share. I remember it well. It was our anniversary and Lisa and I agreed to enjoy a spa day - destination Calistoga. Most of you are probably not aware that I am not really a massage fan (I know weird huh?). Lisa convinces me to get a massage - she wanted a full hour massage, and I said no to that I would take the half hour massage (If they had a 5 minute option I would have taken that). Before walking into the spa I noticed there was airglider r...ides directly across the street. When Lisa saw that i was looking with interest she said something like - No way are you going to do that don't even think about it. I probably just said something like "What?" while shrugging my shoulders. So I go in for my massage which did nothing for me, I rushed out of the spa ran across the street and asked the airglider pilot can you take me up now? He said yeah, we can go now. So I had this amazing experience flying over the Calistoga mountains in this airglider. The pilot asked me "Do you have a strong stomach?" - I told him in fact I do. He said "How about a few dipsy doodles?" , and I replied without hesitation "I would love some dipsy doodles" -- not knowing exactly what that was - but I was game. So he pointed the nose of the airglider straight down to the ground with tremendous speed building up and then pulling up on the stick heading straight up - felt like a roller coaster but not on any tracks that I could see. He did this about 4 or 5 times - it was very exhilarating to say the least. I told him I had to get back before my wife gets out of her massage. I didn't expect him to take a polariod of me getting out. You can see how relaxed I looked - way way better than a massage. So I grabbed the photo and ran back to the spa and quickly sat down in the waiting room as if I had never left. When we were walking out together I handed her the photo and she said "You didn't?" I have to say I never felt more relaxed on that spa day. I don't remember the year it took place but apparently pink hats and aviator glasses were in style.
