By Christmas 1915 Joe Pilates, like many thousands of his fellow internees, was spending his second Christmas away from family and friends. This card was one of... hope sent by internees with thoughts that 1916 may bring an end to their plight. Roughly translated, with a little poetic license, the card reads as follows: Sunny morning in the New Year! The bridge of wishes so golden clear. Can I finally cross, help to build and to mend, Hurry home to the loved ones’ content. There is light at the end of the tunnel Glück und Frieden Happiness and Peace for 2021

Did you know that Joseph Pilates had a wall of fame? His studio walls were covered with before and after photos of clients, anatomy charts, exercise posters, se...lf portraits, and head shots of many of his famous clients. #WallOfFameFriday At Christmas time his clients showed their gratitude by giving him bottles of the best liquor. Marion Rogers, wife of Joseph's good friend Frederick Rand Rogers, recalls, "the tree was decorated with bottles." One year, Rogers stopped by to help celebrate Christmas Eve. Being a teetotaler, he did not bring a bottle. Pilates was fine with that and instead insisted that Rogers take a bottle home to Marion to celebrate. Joe handed over a bottle of the best liquor and would not be turned down by Rogers. For many years after, Marion said, "Thank you Joe Pilates!" So cheers to Joseph Pilates, this weeks #WOFF #woff person. This photo of the bronze bust of Joe is on the back cover of the Pilates Pamphlet, originally published by Pilates and Rogers in 1957 (reprints including the full story of the bust available in the store section of cathystrack.com).

Hanna Sakmirda emigrated from Germany in 1924 when she was 21 years old with plans to work as a household maid. She worked for Joe and Clara Pilates, but would ...often leave the studio for several weeks at a time to care for her own family. (She was married with two young sons.) While at the Pilates studio, Hanna helped with cooking and cleaning duties and drove Joe and Clara to their cottage near Jacob's Pillow. Hanna also learned the Pilates exercises and helped train and supervise the clients. After Joe died, Hanna continued to teach with Clara and she contributed money to support Clara. Hanna wrote to her family members in Germany that she seriously considered taking over the studio after Joe's death, but felt that she was already too old to carry on the work the way it should be done. In my last post I wrote about Alan Herdman bringing the Pilates Method back to the British Isles just over 50 years after Joseph Pilates had left the Isle of Ma...n. Alan himself is now amazingly approaching 50 years of teaching and is regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts on Pilates. Alan trained intensively with Carola Trier and Bob Fitzgerald and Bob himself came over to England to supervise the installation of the apparatus. This short article from Post Magazine from December 1970 was when it all started!
