Cupping Works!! The picture above depicts a ongoing patient of mine who presents with chronic back pain and tightness. The patient reports the T12 area is most painful due to a injury/ trauma at this site. The picture shows although this patient’s entire back is tight and clearly shows blood stagnation due to the tight muscles, the key location, as shown by the cupping, is at T12. The extremely dark circle at T12 indicates and verifies this patients complaint of T12 being m...ost painful. The cups are very accurate and will always pick out the most stagnant, tight and painful areas indicated by the degree of darkness presented through each circle. Cupping involves placing cups on the skin to create a suction or vacuum effect. Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This relieves muscle tension, which improves overall blood and oxygen flow and promotes cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue. The suction created facilitates healing by increasing blood flow and resolves blood stagnation. Stagnation is a primary cause of illness according to traditional Chinese medicine. The knots and tightness you feel in your muscles are due to muscle, tissue and even organ stagnation which thereby also creates blood stagnation. Stagnation is a major cause of pain, tension and disease. The dark circles created from the cupping have a direct association with the degree of blockage and stagnation in the muscle and tissue directly below the cup. Basically, the darker the circle the worse the problem at that site. The suction helps to facilitate the flow of Qi and blood in the body confirming the saying pain goes when the energy flows. Have you been cupped lately?

Yu Ping Feng San Plus (Jade Windscreen Plus) Jade windscreen is the most popular traditional formula containing three herbs- Huang Qi (Astragalus), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) and Fang Feng (Siler); that strongly help to boost the immune system to prevent colds, flu and allergies. TCM Zones addition of the four herbs in Jade Windscreen Plus (listed below) make this formula even more powerful... as in immune booster and antiviral / antibacterial fighting formula. According to Chinese medicine this formula boosts a person’s Wei qi or defensive Qi. The four additional herbs include: 1. Guan Zhong (Dryopteris root)-it acts to drain heat and relieves fire toxicity (inflammation and viruses) for wind heat colds and epidemic toxin. It has been shown to prevent the influenza virus. ROOT & BRANCH Why Acupuncture and alternative medicine is very effective is due to this concept of being Holistic, thereby treating the whole body and not just the symptoms. This concept of the treatment being exclusively tailored to your individual needs differs from the standard Western cookie cutter treatment model. A conditions symptoms (Branch/ Effect) are how your body manifests an underlying imbalance and equates for example to: shoulder pain, low back ache, ho...t flashes, headaches, joint problems, poor sleep, eczema, anxiety, PMS, stress, depression etc.... Acupuncture is excellent at addressing symptomatic conditions (Branches) and local pain but unless the symptom is exclusively induced by some trauma or injury there is always an underlying cause. This is what we call the ROOT (CAUSE) treatment in Acupuncture theory because ideally we want to get to the Root of the problem which is the underlying cause of the problem. When you see me looking at your tongue, pressing and diagnosing the abdomen and meticulously checking the pulses and returning to the pulses during the treatment, it is to uncover and treat the underlying energetic Root Cause of your condition. Treatments that incorporate both the Root and Branch treatment are much more effective and achieve longer lasting results and eventual cure then treatments that utilize Branch or symptomatic treatment alone which typically yields only short term change. Japanese style Acupuncture strives to always uncover and address the Root of the condition.

SAMSARA: The untrained mind turned outwardly grasping at worldly possessions, lost in thoughts, emotions and false projections of self and the world. This karmic cycle of suffering is destined to repeat itself over many lifetimes. NIRVANA: The trained mind turned inwardly recognizing its own true nature of inner peace and freedom from grasping and desire, thus freeing the shackles of suffering. An unshakable peace, balance and harmony with the self’s place in the world.

Put simply, medics found that severely ill flu patients nursed outdoors recovered better than those treated indoors. A combination of fresh air and sunlight seems to have prevented deaths among patients; and infections among medical staff.[1] There is scientific support for this. Research shows that outdoor air is a natural disinfectant. Fresh air can kill the flu virus and other harmful germs. Equally, sunlight is germicidal and there is now evidence it can kill the flu virus. Richard Hobday (Coronavirus and the Sun: a Lesson from the 1918 Influenza Pandemic).

COVID-19 We are taking this public health concern seriously. As a medical office, we are always cleaning and disinfecting surfaces several times each day. We continue to do so and have increased our attention, diligence and frequency to this matter of disinfection. 1. All surfaces (rooms, furniture, arm rests, light switches, doorknobs, restroom) are constantly being wiped down and sanitized. 2. Anti viral and antibacterial essential oils are being diffused throughout the d...ay. 3. All patients are being pre-screened via phone to ensure that they are symptom free of colds and fevers. 4. Hand sanitizer has been placed on each patient’s chair for ease and accessibility. 5. A thermometer is available at our front desk that can be self-administered or performed by reception or before the treatment. 6. A Winix air purifier and Hepa filter has been brought in to eliminate airborne microbes. We truly appreciate your loyalty and support during this challenging time. Thank you.

To our loyal patients and supporters of Peace of Zen Acupucture. We have received many phone calls and inquiries if our office is open and if we’re continuing to see patients. We understand that there is a lot of fear, uncertainty and growing concerns surrounding the COVID-19 virus. To date our profession has not been instructed, neither by the CDC, local health department nor the California Acupucture Board on how to proceed. This morning I spoke to the California Acupunctur...e Board directly to receive these latest updates. Acupuncturists are considered primary healthcare providers in the state of California and each offices open or closed status remains at the discretion of each individual office. We have been, and are continuing to closely monitor the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and are staying up-to-date on the safest practices for Peace of Zen Acupuncture, our patients and our community. As a medical office, we are always cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. We continue to do so and have increased or attention, diligence and frequency to this matter of disinfection. As you know our rooms are private and there is rarely an occasion where more than three or four people are in the waiting room at any given time. Generally acupuncture is a highly effective modality to treat colds and flu like symptoms. But presently, to ensure the health of our patients, our staff and our families, until further notice, we would like to request that if you (or any friend or family member you may have had contact with) have in the past 14 days suffered from a fever, cough, cold or flu like symptoms, that you kindly reschedule your appointment when your symptoms have subsided. If you need to speak to me regarding your symptoms or to request herbs, please do not hesitate to call the office. The Chinese herbal medicine pharmacy contains many herbs and formulas that directly treat colds, flu’s, bacteria’s and viruses. Please continue to practice frequent and meticulous hand washing, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, and cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Until further notice Peace of Zen Acupuncture will remain open to serve our patients and community who may need continued treatment for pain, stress and even anxiety from these very troubling times.

Moxibustion, has the origin in the Japanese word Mogusa, that translates as burning plant stick. Moxibustion, frequently used in conjunction with acupuncture, places the burning herb near the skin (the Chinese method has the moxa rolled like a cigar and the moxa stick is held 2-3 inches above the skin); directly on the skin (Japanese method); or directly on top of the acupuncture needle (both Chinese and Japanese methods). The application of moxa directly on acupuncture po...Continue reading
