We are pleased to announce that we have been selected as a recipient of a $73,000 traffic safety grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. This one-year grant will fund various activities with the goal of reducing injuries and fatal collisions on our roadways. The grant-related activities are for the 2021 federal fiscal year, which runs from Oct. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021 and will fund a variety of programs including: Patrols focusing on alcohol and/or dru...g-impaired driving prevention. Patrols focusing on the awareness and education of the California’s hands-free cell phone law Patrols focusing on the awareness and education of the primary causes of crashes (speeding, improper turns, running stop signs or signals, right-of-way violations and driving on the wrong side of the road). Patrols with an emphasis on seat belt and child safety seat education. Traffic safety campaigns for our community focusing on distracted and impaired driving, bicycle and pedestrian safety. Know Your Limit campaigns to interact and educate our community (see our post from September 28th). Collaborative DUI and Traffic Enforcement efforts with neighboring communities. The grant will continue to enhance our ability to provide traffic enforcement and education as a part of our continued effort from 2019’s traffic campaign, Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine. Traffic enforcement has always been a community priority and we aim to make your travel experience the safest it can be. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

This morning a little after 10a.m. one of our alert officers recognized an unoccupied vehicle that was associated to a wanted person out of Pittsburg. Thanks to the observant Brentwood residents who gave us details about the fleeing driver, our officer was able to provide a description and a direction of travel to responding officers. Several of our officers responded to help, including a furry K9 friend from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. After setting up a search area, K9 Rony helped us safely take 52 year-old Steven Mijares (Pittsburg) into custody, after he was found hiding in the side yard of one of the residences. You can try but you can’t hide from the K9’s! Steven Mijares took a trip to county jail for multiple felony warrants and will be facing charges for today’s escapade. Now that’s what we call team work!

Yesterday at approximately 4:42p.m. officers responded to a commercial parking lot on Lone Tree Way (Lone Tree Way/Jeffrey Way) after receiving a report that a shooting had taken place. Thanks to the many callers contacting dispatch, responding officers were updated with vehicle descriptions possibly involved in the incident. Officers immediately confirmed no one was injured at the scene! The crime scene was cordoned off and they began their investigation. Based on witness s...tatements and the evidence collected at the scene, it appears that a firearm was discharged, with multiple vehicles seen fleeing the parking lot in different directions. Officers continued to circulate the area, looking for any of the involved vehicles. Detectives arrived and began a thorough search for any additional witnesses or evidence. At this time, we will not be releasing any further information as this is an ongoing investigation. If you have any information which may help us identify the vehicles or those involved in the shooting, please contact Detective Sares at 925-809-7733 or contact Dispatch at 925-809-7911. Did we tell you about the traffic stop that led to an arrest? Some people, not you, think that traffic officers just pick on drivers for petty things but as you all know, they are just enforcing the law and trying to keep roadways safe. Our traffic officers, on many occasions, initiate a traffic stop and it turns into something more. Well this was recently the case when our ever-alert traffic officer conducted a traffic stop after observing multiple vehicle code violations.... The driver turned out to be unlicensed and on searchable probation! While conducting his investigation, the officer located multiple credit cards, none of which belonged to the driver, and this was a violation of his probation. And there is more When the officer searched the car, he located a collapsible baton, a modified rifle, a high capacity magazine and suspected methamphetamine. 29 year-old Alexander Hernandez (Brentwood) was given a ride to jail and booked on various charges including possession of a leaded cane, illegally possess an assault weapon, possession of a large capacity magazine, and possession of a controlled substance. Drive safe Brentwood!
