Had an ultrasound at the Tahoe Zoo today...

23wk old bengal presented for neurological signs. Labs normal aside from a low USG. Started scanning and noted small liver and bilateral renomegaly. Started my shunt hunt. Bile acids are advised. #shunthunt #feline #bengals #bengalcat #mobilesonographer Abnormal extrahepatic vessel observed most consistent with a gastrocaval shunt. vasculature and biliary tract appear normal. On evaluation of the vasculature, there is a ventrally deviating loop of shunting vessel that comes... off of the portal vein just caudal to the pylorus and merges with the gastric vein, which then loops and enters a dilated vena cava, consistent with a gastrocaval shunt. The portal vein is approximately 2.0 mm distal to the shunting portal vessel. The vena cava is distorted, distended at approximately 6.0 mm, and the aorta measures approximately 4.0 mm. Bilateral renomegaly This is a common observation in young animals with liver shunts. Borderline small liver #shuntsaremynemesis
