Today is Indigenous People's Day - as we celebrate Native American history and its people, let us confront the lies in our personal and collective past as we discover the truth about who we are. My take is below.

Today is the 19th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. 9/11 changed so much in this country, including politics, travel, domestic and international security, and America’s relationship with the world. Most importantly it was responsible for two wars, a renewed support and interest in our military, and an entire generation of empowered, civically engaged veterans who wanted to change how America treated its returning service members.... It also determined the course of my post-military career in recruiting, talent acquisition, and diversity and inclusion. We must continue to take care of our military - soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines - and support our veterans after they transition. Education. Employment. Healthcare. Some good news inside the bad news . . . Employment across the board is headed in the right direction in August, though unemployment rates are still far too high. One thing I'm encouraged by is that the unemployment rate for veterans in all categories is below the national rate for Americans as a whole. Why is that important? It means veterans are holding on to some of the job gains they have made over the past few years, especially as a percentage of the total population.... This is very encouraging and shows that veterans make great employees and corporate America is eager to retain them.

Today is Navajo Code Talker Day. In 1942, as World War II raged overseas, 29 Navajo men joined the U.S. Marines and developed an unbreakable code that would be used across the Pacific throughout the war. They were the Navajo Code Talkers. The Navajo Code Talkers participated in all assaults the U.S. Marines led in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945, including Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleliu and Iwo Jima. The Code Talkers conveyed messages by telephone and radio in their native langua...ge, a code that was never broken by the Japanese. More than 400 Navajo men were recruited as Code Talkers, and only four are still alive Thomas H.
