A common statement we hear when speaking with clients that have senior/geriatric dogs and cats is... "I can't tell if my dog/cat is in pain". To start, I like to say that dogs and cats tend to make humans look like wimps when it comes to being painful, but the reality is that there is much more to it. - Our pets often do not display pain in the same way that humans do. They tend to be secretive about pain. The signs that show their problems are typically subtle. It's importan...t to watch for changes in behavior or activity as clues that there may be a problem. Ask yourself - is this the "norm" for my dog/cat? - Many clients expect that if their pet is painful, then they stop eating. The reality is that our pets will keep eating despite most kinds of pain, especially if the pain is from a chronic disease that they have been "dealing" with for some time. They may pant more, they may avoid their normal activities, they may sleep more. Usually their behavior changes and they step away from their normal habits. - Pain comes from many disease processes, including dental disease, failing organs, osteoarthritis, and gastrointestinal issues, cancer - even a combination of multiple disease processes. As your pet gets older, the best thing you can do is have him/her examined with your regular veterinarian every 6 months. Discuss any subtle changes that are being noted at home and ask how your vet can help your aging pet!

Please keep your pets cool, clean and dry to prevent flies and maggots in this very hot weather. Fly spray and fly masks are also needed for large animals.
