To our #PCCLancer community, we felt it important to share information about what is happening in Artsakh (also known as Nagorno-Karabakh) with you all. While t...his has had very little news coverage, last Sunday morning, Azerbaijan executed military strikes against Artsakh with heavy artillery fire directed at civilian targets. Artsakh is a territory made up of indigenous, ethnic Armenians that broke from Azerbaijan post USSR in 1991. In 1994 (and again in 2016), a ceasefire was signed to bring peace to the region, but that ceasefire has constantly been interrupted by Azerbaijan with small attacks and skirmishes throughout the years, including one just this past July. However, what happened on Sunday has been the most severe attack since the 1990s. Armenia/Artsakh is on the brink of war and hundreds of people on both sides have already paid the price with their lives. The indigenous Armenian population does not want this war and is left defending themselves against an onslaught of military attacks. The PCC community has a significant population of Armenian students, faculty and staff. Some of them have families living in the region; some were born there; many are connected to Artsakh/Armenia in some way or another. Pasadena and its surrounding cities also have a large Armenian community. There are many Armenian-owned business in the area. To our Armenian Students, we want you to know that you are not alone. If you need someone to talk to and process your feelings PCC offers Personal Counseling (https://pasadena.edu/campus-l/personal-counseling/index.php). We are here for you. PCC’s Armenian Student Association (ASA) is also planning upcoming meetings to offer additional support and provide an outlet. If you’re interested in joining you can follow @pcc_asa on Instagram for upcoming news and put yourself on the ASA mailing list on Lancerlife (https://lancerlife.pasadena.edu/organization/asa). For those directly impacted by what is taking place in Artsakh, our thoughts are with you and your loved ones. Together we will overcome.
