On Sept. 23, the LAEP Best Start Northeast Valley Community participated in the second of five Critical Platicas with Dr. Martha Rivas, a workshop series on how to respond to community needs through anti-racist tactics. At the meeting nearly 50 San Fernando Valley parents and community members discussed internalized racism and how to foster unity as a communitynoting that generational healing requires uncovering and honoring the collective story of oppressed people and ancestors. Many shared how life-affirming (and rare) it is when educational programs honor one’s heritageand how they are inspired to create more opportunities for children to experience this at a young age. Thank you, Dr. Rivas for leading our community members (and LAEP staff!) on this important journey! We look forward to the rest of the series!
All of our staff at LAEP are proud to honor the beautiful diversity of the Latinx community -- not just during Latinx Heritage Month, but every month! Let's celebrate our diverse history and unity today and always.

Thank you to our speakers, staff, and the nearly 300 educational leaders who registered for our virtual forum today, Transform Schools for Black Lives! We are grateful to have been able to come together at a critical momenta time where recent events can leave us wordless. Let’s lean on one another, and use our anger and sadness to fuel the movement. For us, that starts with transforming schools for Black lives because as one of our panelists Dena Simmons puts so well: Every child deserves an education that guarantees the safety to learn in the comfort of one’s own skin."
Principals, school leaders, early childhood administrators, & other systems-change practitioners: Join LAEP and innovative educational leaders on Sept. 25 for a crucial conversation around how to foster school communities that honor the voices of African-American students and staff. It's #TBT and we're reflecting on how LAEP's Best Start Northeast Valley Community immediately and selflessly jumped into action when COVID hit many months ago, organizing and assisting 200 families with weekly hot meals. Guess what? This service CONTINUES! Thank you to the parents and community members who have facilitated this -- and thank you to Carrillo's Tortilleria San Fernando, Magaly's Tamales & Mexican Grill, El Nido Family Centers, and MEND Poverty!
Black high school students share what they need from educators to improve their school experience in Education Week's installment of "Black Student Voices." Students, they say, need a seat at the table so they can identify school policies that lead to inequities and advocate for things like counseling supports and representation within curricula. Shout out to one of the featured students, Davion Pilgrim from Inglewood's Morningside High School, a recent LAEP partner school!
On July 24, LAEP Early Childhood Educators & staff held a virtual graduation celebration for children transitioning up and out of our Early Head Start program (ages 0-3), complete with parent recognition awards, keynotes, and more! We talked a lot about the year 2036why? That’s the year these children will graduate college! Here's what one father had to say at the event:... We are grateful for this program and the people who represent it. For the support that they give our children and for taking the time to always help each of the families and support the development of our children. Personally, the program has helped us learn a lot when my child started the program, he could hardly speak many words. Now, he is learning and speaking more. Thank you to each one of the people who help us in the development of my son; thanks to teacher Jannet for always being there, for having patience and affection while teaching. And, thank you, Chahelis for assisting us in the process of getting our son an IEP (Individualized Education Program). We can't wait to see these amazing children and parents continue to grow!
#ICYMI On this #TBT we're looking back at many of our org's top moments from the 2019-20 school year. We rounded them up in today's Diapers To Diplomas quarterly newsletter. Check it out: https://conta.cc/2C8AANX We are grateful to work alongside so many amazing schools, families, and community partners! How did you work with us this year and what was your favorite moment of impact or connection?
In order to meet the needs of the whole child, we must focus on optimizing the school environment for teachers. This research by a behavioral geneticist echoes the approaches we use for our CORE (Cultivating Organizational Resilience & Empowerment) program at LAEP. Check it out!
We love seeing the smiling faces of families excited to read new books! Proud to have sponsored this event via our Best Start Northeast Valley Community team. Well done, Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural & Bookstore! #CommunityDriven
