May is Chip Your Pets Month! According to studies, 1 in 3 pets become lost at some point in their lives. This is why you should consider microchipping your pets. Keep in mind, that it is not a tracking device. Microchips are permanent devices implanted in the skin of your pet that contains information on how to reach you, if they get lost. They cannot provide you a location of your pet, but at least there is a way to contact you if they get the microchip read. ... Therefore, you want to get your pets' microchips checked every once in a while to make sure that they are functioning, because like any other technological devices, they can fail. You also want to make sure that your current contact information is connected to the microchip as well. National Specially-abled Pets Day! You guessed it, a day celebrating those that have a disability or face some physical challenges. Some of these dogs experience paralysis, blindness, deafness, or missing limbs and many times, they are the happiest animals that we see. These slight imperfections make them no less loving than the next pet Sometimes, there’s this assumption that pets that are specially-abled are not as active or they are limited when really, it seems as if ...they are more active and their possibilities are absolutely endless. Nowadays, there are companies that are able to make prosthetics and wheelchairs that allow them to be able to live fulfilled lives. Nothing can get in the way!

How often do we really see purebred dogs anymore? Mutts are adorable, of course, but those purebred breeds is where it all started. Without the purebreds, we wo...uldn’t have the adorable mixes that we have today! With purebreds, behavior tend to be more consistent and predictable. In the years before mutts, many dogs served as assistants to their humans whether it be the Australian Shepherds that that herd cows or the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that reign from British royalty with its loving nature. They have now become mostly household pets and no longer serve their original purposes, but they do provide a purpose nonetheless. They provide humans companionship. Let us revel in the celebration of National Purebred Dog Day!

In 2018, Ventura County Animal Shelters cared for over 11,000 pets in total. Of those 11,000 pets, over 5,000 of them were adopted and over 2,000 were reunited with their families . Ventura County Animal Shelter takes in an average of 34 pets per day. I don’t know about you, but those numbers seem alarming Take a look at what 2018 brought to Ventura County Animal Services. Some of these numbers are down from last year, which is good, but these numbers are still really hig...h. If you or you know someone looking to add a fur baby to their family, encourage them to consider adopting from a shelter. All of those pets are scared and lonely and they just want to go home to a loving family. They want a roof over their head and they want to feel loved and safe. Take a visit to your local shelter and consider adopting or even volunteering. A little goes a long way.

This year’s theme for World Veterinary Day is the Value of Vaccination. Vaccinations are a preventative measure to help protect the health of animals as well as reducing human exposure to zoonotic diseases. Vaccination practices, historically, reduce the predominance of several life-threatening disease, for humans and for animals. What would we do without our veterinarians that help keep our furbabies healthy.

Many of us have dogs that are our best friends, but there are other dogs that dedicate themselves to providing more for their humans. Some of them have jobs as service dogs to help those with impairments make their way through everyday life. Today we say thank you!

Some people march or protest, some p...eople volunteer to clean and plant trees or flowers, others take a political stand and ensure that their elected officials are constantly aware of the growing issues and that they need to be fixed.
