#WednesdayWisdom: Robert Michael Hensel was born with a birth defect known as Spina bifida. He is also a Guinness World Records holder for the longest non-stop wheelie in a wheelchair, covering a total distance of 6.178 miles. Hensel famously said "We, the one's who are challenged, need to be heard. To be seen not as a disability, but as a person who has, and will continue to bloom. To be seen not only as a handicap, but as a well intact human being." . . . #disabilityequity #disabilityawareness #DifferentAbilities #disability #spinabifida #positivity
Will you support PARCA today? Your support helps us make a significant impact in the lives of so many remarkable people with developmental disabilities in the Bay Area. This year, #COVID19 presented unique challenges for our clients, their families, caretakers, providers, and our staff. Our clients are at a heightened risk for coronavirus and struggle with social isolation. Many clients and their families lost their jobs and were unable to pay for food and care. We've worke...d tirelessly to provide the best level of care, compassion, and kindness to our clients and their families. We're constantly adapting to our "new normal" and seeking to ensure we're all connected and clients are provided the care they need and deserve. We shifted to provide a day program for clients at one of our homes, we have all-day childcare and remote learning support for children of essential workers, and we provide our clients who are essential workers with proper PPE and share how to stay safe and healthy. We're honored to learn from our clients and with them. They're joyful, positive, and optimistic during such an uncertain time. We're grateful for all the Zoom birthdays, the pen pal letter exchanges, setting and reaching fitness goals together, and our virtual holiday celebrations. Please join us in making a year-end donation to PARCA. Your generous support of any amount helps us provide services, safety, and a sense of community to people with developmental disabilities in the Bay Area. Thank you for giving and sharing widely! We're incredibly grateful. www.parca.org/donate #givingtuesday #disabilityawareness #supportlocal #bayarea #sanfrancisco #serviceprovider #disabilityequity

Through using dance as a form of therapy, students at UCLA are making a difference in children's lives. "We’re able to allow the kids a chance to express themselves and maybe some of the challenges that they’ve encountered in a way that translates into a more positive and exciting medium. This year has undoubtedly been a challenging one, particularly for kids with developmental disabilities and their caregivers. Here are a few helpful tips on how to help kids learn at home. Our faves include taking breaks to move like going for a family walk or dancing for a couple minutes. #learnfromhome #covidkids #inclusion #copingduringcovid #disabilityisnotinability
