In this #legal story, we once again learn that our kids are targets, not just by the usual criminals, but also by marketers. Here, the problem is that the developers and marketers of the popular "lip syncing" app Musical.ly (now TikTok) made the kids' profile information, such as email addresses as well as a child’s name, age, school and picture, publicly available without parental permission (a clear violation of the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act). How th...e developers and marketers did not see the obvious problems with this is unimaginable. However, when the app has been downloaded by more than 200 million people worldwide, and 65 million in the U.S alone, I guess you just get too busy counting your money to worry about any harms you might be causing to children, even when when those children are being directly contacted by adult predators.
