The CHP received notification from Caltrans that snow levels are expected to fall below the 4,144 ft. elevation of the Tejon Pass (along Interstate 5). Travel ...could be impacted on I-5 through the Grapevine. Motorists who plan on traveling through the area should be considering alternate routes. Generally, alternate routes for travelers are US-101 to SR-166 to I-5, or SR-14 to SR-58 to SR-99. At this time, this is a closure warning ONLY. The freeway remains OPEN. Residents of the Santa Clarita Valley and Castaic, specifically, should prepare for additional vehicular traffic on surface streets as traffic may be channeled off the freeways. In the event Operation Snowflake is implemented, we highly recommend staying home if you don’t have to use the roads. CHP has contingency plans in place to deploy personnel to facilitate the closure/detours including drawing officers from other Highway Patrol Areas as needed. When I-5 is closed due to ice/snow on the Grapevine, or a brushfire or other incident in northern L.A. County, this innovation will help us turn around northbou...nd cars and trucks on I-5 in the Castaic area, north of Santa Clarita. Northbound drivers will be able to make a U-turn across the median to head back toward L.A. on the southbound lanes of I-5. Today, Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol inspected the new gate, which is large enough for big trucks. See more
