Online Presence and #CollegeAdmissions in the Digital Age In addition to decade-old worries about GPAs, résumés, extracurricular activities, and interviews, today’s university applicants face a new predicament: they must consider their online presence and the repercussions of #socialmedia. Let’s face it: GPAs and SAT scores are approaching their theoretical limits. With the so-called academic inflation phenomenon, which describes applicants' seemingly endless GPA and SAT in...creases, universities face an abundance of decorated students with similar qualifications. From numbers, alone, it is difficult to determine accurately which students are the best candidates for admission. Hence, officials are availing themselves of the digital age and the plethora of information it provides. I contacted 10 admission offices of highly competitive universities and, of those, 4 admit that they actively solicit information from #socialnetworks to learn about prospective students. For good reason, admissions consultants harp on the perils of social media. I tell students to assume admission officials have access to their #Facebook posts and photographs. Assume the worst, and then implement online safeguards to keep information private. Watch the foul language on #Twitter, and remove the risqué #Instagram photos. If privacy concerns you, consider changing your Facebook name, adjust privacy settings, and un-tag old or gratuitous photos.
