At this year’s Indy 500 I witnessed the Gordon Pipers escort the race’s trophy to the winners circle. I thought of the great Eddie Sachs, who playfully marched with the pipers the year before he died in a crash on the main stretch. It is said that on that day the pipers played the old Jacobite tune O’ Rowan Tree in his memory....

Wilbur Shaw won the ‘39 & ‘40 Indy 500 in this Maserati. Just 6 months before Pearl Harbor, he was winning the 500 again in the same car. No one has ever 3peated the 500.
