Our best management practices to reduce impact on nesting birds during tree care suggests leaving old nests in place. Some birds reuse their nests or nests of... other birds, renovate them, or repurpose the material to construct a new nest. Nature photographer, Peggy Honda, provided us with these two photos that show a female Allen's Hummingbird sequestering material from her nest to build another.... just as her mature young are preparing to fledge! (Look closely between the blades of the palm to spot them.) What an economically wise mom! See more

They’ll also occasionally hold one foot forward and shuffle it rapidly over the surface of sand or mud, as if to startle small creatures into moving.
