Tai Chi practice enhances archery technique. I observe students who study both tai chi and archery with me and only archery students. The difference in speed of learning, ability to focus, gracefulness and precision is vast. Teachers Several days ago Teacher’s day was celebrated in Argentina. Respectful words and gifts followed, I am sure. Being a students and a teacher of PA Kua Ma...rtial and Healing art I have a dual perspective on a student-teacher relationship. For about 20 years I study Pa Kua, learning not only from words and physical practice with my teacher(s), but mainly by observing the way things are said, done, situations entered and resolved, facial expressions or lack of them, body language and silence. Those are treasures for observant students that the master/teacher allows them to see, as part of their studies. Words of gratitude and gifts for the teacher are really for the student to quiet the feeling of debt for the hours of teacher’s time, for wisdom shared and infinite patience. We, masters know it and accept for students’ sake a bit like you’d take a child’s drawing. Oh, how many times I struggled for the perfect gift for my teacher, never in the end measuring up for the intended gratitude, no matter the resources spent. (In my case the best gift for my teacher, I think, would be applying the teachings in a profound way, benefiting hundreds, maybe thousands and also in the smallest way for my family and myself.) As a teacher I received thanks and material trinkets and treasures from students which I humbly accepted, yet I knew that taking them, (how can I not?) is letting my students to come up short of what would be a perfect gift from them to their master. The only way to be a teacher is to have a student, so the most perfect gift is a new student for the master to hone it’s knowledge and skills. Every student is a golden nugget Grandmaster Magliacano used to say the more covered with dirt (he used another word), the more valuable for the teacher. So, next time you are overcome with feeling of love and thankfulness for those who share their wisdom with you, find a way to share it with many others family, friends or people in line at Trader Joe’s. And be present for your teacher - on the mat, on the phone or in your thoughts. P.S. World Teacher’s Day is October 5, we got time.
