Here are a few highlights from last night’s board meeting (For the full board meeting highlights, visit www.sanjuan.edu/BoardBriefsMay25): *Superintendent Kern ...shared it is expected that spacing limitations within our schools will be removed when state and local health guidance changes on June 15. The face covering requirement at schools is not expected to change on June 15. Face covering guidance from the California Department of Public Health and Sacramento County Public Health may change for the 2021-2022 school year, but that has not yet been determined. All San Juan Unified schools will return to a traditional full-time, five days per-week schedule starting Aug. 12. The district will continue to provide a choice in instructional models by offering independent study for grades 9-12 and homeschool for kindergarten through eighth grade. A virtual academy option is being explored, however, state legislators and other officials are still discussing what may or may not be allowed. This could affect the district’s ability to offer a virtual academy option. *The board approved the name of Katherine Johnson Middle School for the new middle school at Encina’s existing campus. Katherine Johnson was a mathematician for NASA and her math helped the U.S. land on the moon. This is the first school in San Juan Unified named after a woman and a person of color.

And, ...we’ll still have options for those who prefer something other than traditional in-person learning with our independent study (9-12) and homeschool (K-8) options. In addition, a new virtual academy (TK-12) option is being explored. More at www.sanjuan.edu/fall2021. See more
