Fifty years ago today, La Grande vitesse was dedicated in Grand Rapids, Michigan. One of Calder’s most iconic works, the forty-three-foot tall stabile was the f...irst sculpture to be funded by the public art program of the National Endowment for the Arts. Calder was in attendance for the ceremony, which included the premiere performances of Inaugural Fanfare by Aaron Copeland and A Festive Piece for Alexander Calder by Jack Fortner. Over the past five decades, La Grande vitesse has become synonymous with Grand Rapids, appearing on everything from street signs to sewer grates in the city.
