Thank you to Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis who urged Mayor Steinberg to work with our community coalition (Sacramento Investment Without Displacement ) to achieve a Community Benefits Agreement around the Aggie Square development project at the UC Med Center. Pop some popcorn, grab some snacks, turn your TV to KVIE 6, and log onto to zoom! Join tenants of New Helvetia: Alder Grove & Seavey Circle for a Zoom Movie Night! PBS KVIE will be showing Chris Lango's "The Time Is Now: The Life of Nathaniel Colley," a film about the civil rights history of New Helvetia and the incredible work of Colley, Sacramento's first Black Lawyer who fought to integrate public housing. Tenants continue Colley's civil rights work in fighting to prote...ct their community today. Learning the history of this historic housing complex is critical in understanding why it must remain centrally-located affordable housing for current and future tenants, in a rapidly changing and increasingly unaffordable City. A Zoom link will be provided before the event. Repairs not demolition - #SaveNewHelvetia!

Let’s move forward on the ‘Equity’ provisions - without ‘Strong Mayor’. - A lot of ordinary humans don’t understand how the budget process works and why their needs are not being met, Dramer said. Big ticket projects and economic development such as the Golden 1 Center and the Sacramento Convention Center have been concentrated in the city’s urban core, Dramer said, while other neighborhoods like in North and south Sacramento struggle to secure similar investments.... Those are important things for us, but they’re not doing anything for the people in District 2 and District 8, and that’s where our largest communities of color are based, Dramer said. If it’s brought to the attention and forefront, perhaps there will be more care and thought and consideration about where the city is distributing its money. #NoWayMeasureA

The Sacramento City Council is out of control trying to divert our limited and unknown future local property taxes to the UC and Billion dollar companies like Wexford to augment the financing of the Aggie Square mass development in the Med Center and Oak Park neighborhoods. This development will cause mass gentrification and rising of rents in the UC Med Center and Oak Park and surrounding neighborhoods if the developers don't agree to a Community Benefits Agreement brought ...forward BY THE COMMUNITY! NOT by the Councilmembers who are using this project to build upon their own power- and who are excluding the actual community. Shame on you Councilmembers Eric Guerra & Jay Schenirer. You are trying to hijack the real community benefits agreement that Organize Sacramento and our partner nonprofit partners, AKA Sacramento Investment Without Displacement have been working on for 2 years! ADD YOUR NAME: demand California join 8 other states and 130 cities in celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day. Join us in urging the state to officially replace Co...lumbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day in California. While we have a Governor’s proclamation, we deserve a deep commitment -- and that means getting this change codified in the legislature. Raise your voice to let California’s State Legislature know that you would like Columbus Day to be permanently removed and replaced with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. California is home to the largest state population of Native Americans in the country. It is also home to millions of Indigenous peoples from Mexico and Central America. It’s time that we get rid of Columbus Day, and the harmful legacy associated with it, and officially replace it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. At least eight states and more than 130 cities observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Add your name and urge the California State Legislature to join the movement to uplift the diversity and resiliency of Indigenous Peoples.

A graduate of the Boards & Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI), Katie Valenzuela was also inspired by two local unions that joined tenant advocates to gather more than 46,000 signatures to place rent control on this November’s ballot. Hansen, backed by tens of thousands of real estate dollars, tried to derail the effort by proposing nonbinding landlord-tenant mediation instead. Valenzuela, who accepted no campaign contributions from the real estate and oil industries, or from law enforcement, said that proposal would have cost the city a lot of money and kept tenants utterly defenseless against their landlords. Hansen’s gambit went nowhere. #VoteYesOnC

Earlier this year, in response to the pandemic and thanks to the advocacy of the Sacramento Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, the City of Sacramento City passed an ordinance to protect employees at their jobs, ensure fair employment practices and mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. So how exactly does it work? The ordinance, which went into effect July 15, requires employers in the City of Sacramento to comply with specific health and safety protocols. Violations of these p...rotocols can result in penalties, including fines up to $25,000. The worker protection ordinance is an effort to help businesses understand the safety measures to be taken to keep their employees safe, said Peter Lemos, the City’s code and housing enforcement chief. More importantly, this ordinance gives an employee a sense of security and a meaningful avenue of response if an employer is not compliant with safety requirements related to COVID-19. While neighborhoods surrounding Aggie Square will be altered by the many thousands of new workers and students at Aggie Square, with a recent estimate as high as 25,000, and the flow of billions of dollars, the traditional avenues of resident involvement will be weakened, and those communities already on the fringes are likely to be further silenced, reads a statement from the group. On Wednesday, September 30, we’ll be taking our voices directly to Gov. Newsom, with car c...aravans and socially distant press conferences at four of his offices across the state. We will no longer be ignored or left behind. Our united voices will be heard, and we will hold the governor accountable for the promises he made to family child care providers. If we want state leaders to act, then we must show up in force. Face masks are highly encouraged and will be provided if needed. Children’s safety is our priority so please practice proper safety protocols.

Via: Dr. Flojaune G. Cofer It probably pains no one more than me to say NO to Measure A because it means saying no to the equity proposals that it includes, and a few are ideas I helped introduce and champion - and REALLY want to see happen! But, equity is not side dish or sweetener for a major change to the power structure. Equity is the entire entree! It doesn't come with grandfather clauses, hold outs and caveats. It is our highest purpose and deserves consideration on it...s merits alone. I don't think the City of Sacramento is benefited by concentrating more power in the office of the Mayor. And, if it passes, the current Mayor will occupy the office for 40% of the time it exists (before it is up for renewal in 2030) and we will have no future elections to "hold him accountable" because of the new term limits. This is a governance change, but it comes with a person, so that person's record has to be evaluated with it. I've previously opined on that record (link in comments). Lastly, the timing is especially curious: This feels like a way to silence the incoming Councilmembers, who are all People of Color and more progressive than the current Council composition. You know how frustrating it is to see voter access tampered with to decrease the influence of less conservative voters? Well, this is the "Deep Blue state" version of that: when you feel like you're losing influence, change the rules. This is not a move in the interest of equity. #NoWayMeasureA
