Little Known Facts About Famous Composers: "Papa Haydn" - Franz Joseph Haydn Franz Joseph Haydn, composer of the Classical period who lived mostly in Austria, ((1732-1809) was known as Papa Haydn. Papa Haydn started out as a term of affection given to Haydn by the musicians who worked for him. Mozart, who was young enough to be Haydn’s son, was influenced by him. ... Haydn also taught Beethoven some composition techniques. Haydn was also known as a peacemaker as he had a very good sense of fairness and sometimes helped musicians get along with each other. Haydn worked for a wealthy Hungarian, Prince Esterhazy, conducting his orchestra and composing many symphonies and chamber works for the prince’s court. He also worked in England for some time. Haydn had a good sense of humor and this shows in some of his symphonies, such as having a loud chord played as a surprise in his Surprise Symphony. Little Known Facts About Famous Composers: the world’s principal violin virtuoso - Niccolò Paganini Niccolò Paganini, born in 1782, died in 1840, lived in Italy and France. He was a popular idol, he inspired the Romantic mystique of the virtuoso and revolutionized the violin technique. He expanded the violin technique to include ways of playing that did not exist before he invented them. In his compositions for the violin, the sounds of animals and other instruments were... sometimes imitated. As a composer, he wrote works for the violin; it is not well-known that Paganini was also an excellent guitarist. Paganini composed his own works to play exclusively in his concerts, all of which profoundly influenced the evolution of the violin technique. His well-known 24 Caprices was likely composed in the period between 1805 and 1809. Also during this period, he composed the majority of the solo pieces, duo-sonatas, trios, and quartets for the guitar, either as a solo instrument or with strings. In the 1820’s Paganini toured all over Europe, amazing audiences with his virtuosic (technically brilliant) violin playing. The etude, La Campanella (The Clock) was written with another instrumental virtuoso, the pianist and composer, Franz Liszt. In our violin classes, we introduce the world-famous composers and their music.
