OPTM Physical Therapy of Saratoga 20.02.2021

WHAT IS AFS? Applied Functional Science is looking at a person's orthopedic and/or musculoskeletal disorders and applying them to what gives their life meaning. This can be for daily activities (what someone has to do, like walking, standing up from a chair, etc.) and for what they enjoy doing (gardening, recreational activities, etc.). Instead of just working with the body, AFS incorporates the mind and spirit as well in order to help a person accomplish their goals. Another... big premise of AFS is that people come in with pain in a certain part of their body, but the cause of the pain can be coming from a different part of the body. With this in mind, AFS takes a holistic approach to treating dysfunction and pain rather than compartmentalizing body parts. The body is interdependent, and one body part can affect another (this is called a chain reaction!). Most of the time, treating the hip, foot, and thoracic spine (upper back) tends to help a lot of the problems people come into PT with. WHO CAN IT HELP? It can help anyone with an orthopedic issue that has a problem with movement or with functional activities (things that give them meaning). People can come into PT with not only pain, but also fear and confidence issues about returning to these activities. AFS focuses on returning that confidence and capability in order to achieve one's goals. This week, we're highlighting the sportmetrics program we have available here at OPTM. Sportsmetrics is the first and largest ACL injury prevention program scientifically proven to decrease serious knee ligament injuries in female athletes. Sportsmetrics program consists of warm-up, plyometric training program, strengthening program followed, and ended with a flexibility program. The plyometric training program is used to teach the athlete the preposition the entire body safe...ly when jumping landing. The selection and progression of these exercises are designed for neuromuscular retraining proceeding from simple jumping drills to multi-directional, single-foot hops and plyometrics with an emphasis on quick turnover. Final day of the Theraband! For the last Theraband exercise, Emily is demonstrating Straight Arm Pulldowns with her hips and knees in a 90/90 position. Notice how her back is flat against the floor - this engages your core and makes the exercise harder! Do not let your back arch! Loop the band around something secure and make sure you can grab both sides of the band. Lay down a few feet away from where the band is tied so your arms can stay straight the entire time. Start w...ith your arms in a straight "Y" position, maintain your back flat against the floor, and pull both arms down until you are hovering right above the floor. These modifications simply seek to increase space in the shoulder joint relative to the non-pillow position. This can often help because it reduces compression on whatever tissue is irritated and so tends to feel better As mentioned previously - theres no right or wrong sleeping position. You don’t need to change anything if you don’t have pain & even if you do make a change to alleviate pain it doesn’t need to be permanent.
