Please join us to bring some joy to LGBTQ seniors who have been sheltering in place since March! The holidays can be very difficult for LGBTQ seniors, and this year will prove to be even more challenging. We are seeking volunteers who would like to help assemble Give Thanks holiday gift baskets and write special messages on holiday cards on Saturday, November 7th. The goal is to put together 600 baskets and special handwritten cards that will be delivered to LGBTQ seniors in ...San Francisco during the month of November and December. We will do everything in our power to make this a wonderful experience! Safety is important too! We ask volunteers to please arrive with face masks. If you do not have one; we will have plenty of face masks and gloves on hand. In addition, we will take temperatures that will not require us touching you, and takes a few seconds to do. When: Saturday, November 7, 2020 Location: Openhouse, 65 Laguna Street, San Francisco, CA. 94102 Time: 9:00am- 12pm For more questions: Contact: [email protected] or 415-659-8123

This November, we recognize Native American History Month, and acknowledge the significant contributions that enrich our Nation. The importance of centering stories on the heritage and culture of Indigenous peoples require momentum year round, it is our responsibility as a community to educate ourselves and not solely rely on BIPOC for their emotional labor and time. Openhouse is fortunate to be a diverse community including Two Spirit leaders who graciously invite us to le...arn from their experiences and journey's. For those unfamiliar with Two Spirt identities, the term predates LGBTQ terminology and language, and represents an identity that has been present in Native communities for countless generations. We encourage everyone to take a moment to watch this interview with Author and Indigenous elder, Ma-Nee Chacaby, share the power of walking in their identity.

"As I age, time passes me at a faster pace. There is more to remember and many more people to remember. The Day of the Dead, celebrated on November 2, is a day for me to pause from daily routines and honor the memory of those that have gone before me and whom I loved and cared for. It is a chance to respond to a world with its tumultuous events and ponder how many more lives that I knew, and didn’t know, graced this earth." - Luis de la Garza, Openhouse Community Member Thank... you, Luis de la Garza, for inviting Openhouse to honor tradition, heritage, and the power of remembrance during Dia de los Muertos. 18 Reasons is a nonprofit cooking school on a mission to empower communities with the confidence and creativity needed to buy, cook, and eat good food every day. Recognizing the importance of accessibility, 18 Reasons invited 10 Openhouse community members to participate in virtual cooking classes. Since mid-September, 18 Reasons has donated the ingredients for Openhouse community members to follow an 18 Reasons selected recipe. After we receive the ingredients, we organize them onsite into ingredient kits that are delivered to our Openhouse chefs prior to participating in an interactive hands-on cooking class, via Zoom with 18 Reasons. The experience has been rewarding, inspiring, and most importantly...TASTY. Support 18 Reasons and their very important work at https://18reasons.org/ !
