On Sunday night, I offered my students an opportunity to write a Psalm together. So we started adding lines to a private group. One line at a time, the students and I adding lines at random. Some added on to what other voices were saying, others had their own things they needed to say. It was meaningful for us, so I wanted to give that same opportunity here, although I realize that might be challenging due to how political things get very quickly on Facebook. But let's try it... anyway. Here are the rules I gave them: 1. Be poetic. Flowery language is encouraged over particularity. Think of this as writing a journal entry that others might read. You know what you mean and who you're talking about; it's okay if they don't know the particulars. 2. No naming names. There are almost no personal names in the Psalms (a few extolling King David, but we will ignore that for this exercise). Instead, say things like "those who are supposed to protect us," "our leaders," or "the feared disease." You all know what I'm talking about, but it reads like it's inviting us into a shared experience, despite our take on politics, science, or even faith. 3. Write from emotion, not theology. There is a lot in the Psalms that is theologically wrong. Also scientifically wrong, in case anyone was thinking it. But that's okay because it's not the point of the Psalms. The Psalms are a beautiful (and sometimes not-so-beautiful) example of people expressing their raw emotion to God. It can be an affirmation of faith, trust despite circumstances, desperation, anger, a call for God to act, an attempt to bargain with God, vows of what I will do if God responds to my plea, hope...wherever your heart is. Also, if it's a mess and you're in several of those places at once, that's totally okay. I think a lot of us are right there with you. Our Psalm went all over the place. But it felt real and it felt right. I hope you can find that here as well. Feel free to write whatever is on your heart in the comments below.
Due to the heat, we will be online only this Sunday. Hope to see you there.
