A view from 'Waterman Junction', AKA Old Barstow....A glimpse of how Barstow Yard was leveled and the equipment used...A Work Team. As well as a photo of early... Barstow Yard with 'Buzzard Rock' in the background. It is interesting, for those that know, that you can make out the area of where 'Waterman Mine' is, about 1/4 of the way in from the upper left corner...A view from my old backyard growing up. From Charles Mitchell Sr's. Album...Anyone sharing these should give full Credit to Charles Mitchell Sr. with thanks to his Granddaughter Denise Mitchell Bond for making them available.
How many of you old timers remember this truck and who drove it?
Before the Barstow Station Cinema 6 I believe it was a Cinema 4, may be wrong but that's what I remember there was the Barstow Theater on Main St. next to the U...SO...Before that the Theater was located on the Northeast corner of Second and Main...However, there was the Forum Theatre on Main Street. I don't have a postcard or photo of Barstow Station Cinema 6 but I do have photos of the other 3 local theaters. Attached with them is a Forum Theatre, Folding Program Mailer from 1938 with the schedule of movies shown for the period of April 17, through April 30, 1938...Were you there?
Here's something about Barstow you may not have heard about.......back in the 40's and 50's, Barstow became quite the "hot-spot" in the archery world, due to th...is man. He was quite well-known for his hunting and shooting skills and every year he put on an archery tournament which attracted 100's of participants from all over the west, including Howard Hill, and Erle Stanley Garner - who were both avid bow hunters. I remember seeing parked cars up and down Main St. for blocks. He had a course set up around the outside of Hobbs' Field with various targets that you would complete with scores for accuracy and time. He had softballs hung on bailing wire that could be swung as targets. I remember seeing as many as 20 shooters at a time shooting targets at various distances. He taught us kids how to shoot, and hunt (mostly jackrabbits and coyotes), and was very kind and patient. There is still lots of information on the net about this man, if you look hard enough. Some of the articles I've seen said he was from So/Cal, or Bakersfield, but no, Barstow was his home. Did I mention that "Nubby" only had one leg? That's right! In competitive archery today there is something called the "Nubby Pate shot", where you string your bow, and shoot a tin can all while standing on a tree stump - with one leg! I found this picture of him on the net. See more
Another oldie. CIF track champs in 1950. Anyone know who these guys are?
Wa-a-a-yback Wednesday! The only show in town (and a pretty racy one at that) 1948
More Hobbs' Field stuff. Model airplane guys used to fly their planes there.
View from the air, on a snowy day in 1955. Diesel shops and round house on the left, stock yards visible on the right.
W-a-a-ayyback Wednesday! 1955 photo of the Riffian Band. Did you know any of these "kids"?
Was at Yermo, CA. They also had a Bunkhouse & Cafe for train crews.
