FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: VOTING AND ACTION: A Time for Prayer, Learning and Conversation We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern." - Pope Francis, 9/16/13 Taking into consideration the many issues that are integral to the choices we make as we vote, the Church offers trusted resourc...es for information to guide citizens in this Election Year. These two key links are already available on our Parish website (www.olasanbernardino.org) through the icons on the right side of the front page. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (www.usccb.org ) has multiple resources on Civil Dialogue and Forming Consciences as Faithful Catholics and Citizens. Browse the website and you will find insightful and helpful articles. Our website of our Diocese of San Bernardino (www.sbdiocese.org) offers a RESOURCE CENTER link FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP that connects to the statements from our Bishops, information from the California Catholic Conference of Bishops on the California Propositions. It also provides other materials that will give guidance as well as the link to the USCCB website. From that front page of the website, scroll through the RESOURCE CENTER and you will find many different resources for more than the Faithful Citizenship topic. These are great resources for you for these topics and so much more. Take time for your own formation and information. God bless. See more

October 25, 2020 30th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: JOURNEY TO COMMITMENT Clare Colella Keep it simple is often used as a motto for things in daily life. Today in the Gospel we hear what sounds like a very simple rule of life: Love God with your whole heart, soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. These two commands sum up not only the whole law and the prophets which were the guides for the Jews, but are also the guides by which we are called to live as disc...iples of Jesus. God has given us the capacity to be welcoming and compassionate to others. In his encyclical Caritas in veritate, Pope Benedict XVI teaches that Love... is an extraordinary force which leads people to opt for courageous and generous engagement in the field of justice and peace. It is a force that has its origin in God. (1) To live as loving and compassionate disciples is not easy: we realize that we need the grace of God and the help of the faith community. In her wisdom, the Church gathers us together as a community each Sunday, that we might receive the spiritual nourishment of the Eucharist in a spiritual Communion perhaps, but always in the context of Mass -- and the strength, the fellowship of the community to go out and live the Word. We bring our cares and concerns many as they are and offer them in trusting prayer to God who hears and cares and responds. Our daily prayer, our time with God, is also the on-going strength to continue the mission of Jesus given to us to love and serve God and one another, to live the Good News of mercy, redemption and forgiveness. When Jesus links these two commands love God (Deuteronomy 6:5) and love others (Leviticus 19:18) -- he is not only affirming the relationship of the two, but giving to his listeners, disciples and others, the insight that true love of God is made manifest in visible ways, in our relationship with and love of one another. Each day may we be not only loving disciples, but also the strength and support for others who are also living out these two great commandments. In our Adult Initiation ministry as we continue to study the Scriptures and its message to us, we also discover or rediscover that God is present in our lives and that our faith journey has not been in isolation. Jesus gives us teachings and examples of how we prepare together and come to the banquet now and to the eternal banquet in heavenbecoming saints! Wednesday Evening: 7:00 PM, October 28 on Zoom Saints and Holy Days; Choosing Sponsors Question: Who are the saints in your life who have given you the example of being truly a disciple of Jesus?

November 2 Parish Mass for our dear Deceased: With the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed coming on November 2, Our Lady of the Assumption will continue its tradition of a special Mass for our parishioners to remember and pray for loved ones who had died, especially those who died this past year. With our special outdoor Mass at 6:00 PM on Monday, November 2, parish members are invited to bring a picture of your loved one that you will place on a small table near th...e altar. Because of the COVID-related restrictions, there cannot be open candles, but a small battery-operated tea candle can accompany the picture. The prayers of the Mass will especially include those whom we love who have gone home to God. This beloved tradition here helps all of us remember that those who have died are always with us in spirit and they rest now in peace. More information will be forthcoming, so stay tuned to our Facebook page. Thank you and God bless.

October 18, 2020 29th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: KNOWING TO WHOM WE BELONG Clare Colella There is something powerful and precious about knowing to whom you belong. As we become aware of our family roots, our cultural heritage and the stories of our ancestors, we begin to identify more strongly with the roots and heart of our belonging it is more than a name it is the foundation for who we know we are and who we might become. It is not a limitation, it is a springboar...d. In the reading from Isaiah we hear that God has not only saved and sheltered his Chosen People, he has also called them by name in effect, assuring the people that they are protected, knowing that they are God’s own and that God is the Lord, there is no other. What an awesome relationship! Do we believe that we also inherit that relationship with our loving God? In the opening paragraphs of his letter to the Thessalonians, Paul joyfully and gratefully commends their community not only for their faith, but also reminds them that the gospel the Good News -- was given to them through the Holy Spirit the bond of faith and the root of being a spiritual family. Do you know your spiritual family? How are you connected to all the children of God? But it is in the Gospel that we hear the challenge of belonging to God that we are called to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. What is in our hearts, our priorities, our lives that belong to God? As we claim our Catholic Christian faith, choosing the path of continuing conversion, we believe that all that we are and hope to be belongs to God. Grace is the gift and strength that helps us to grow into becoming what we already are: God’s beloved, God’s own. Are we ready and willing to be God’s own? Wednesday Evening: 7:00 PM, October 21on Zoom Introduction to the New Testament Question: What are your two favorite stories/events from the New Testament? Why?

St. Francis and Pope Francis: October 4th -- in addition to being the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, this is also the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi -- a perfect day to pray especially for our Holy Father Pope Francis. He is the first Pope to take the name of Francis upon being elected to the Chair of St. Peter. For a very long time he has lived in the spirit of that saint in his simplicity and care for the poor. For our Holy Father and for all the leaders of our Church, we pray to the Lord!
