VETERANS DAY 2019 WILL ARRIVE ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11th, 2019. SO LET'S TAKE THE TIME TO HONOR THIS FILIPINO AMERICAN WWII HERO: On September 24th, 1942, LEOVIGI...LDO "LEO" MIGUEL GIRON (Born: August 20th, 1911), was inducted into the U.S. Army and was attached to the 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiment for basic training. He was then trained as a radio signal operator by the U.S. Army Signal Corps School at Camp Kohler, California (near Sacramento). He was shipped to Australia at Camp X near Tabragalba, near Beaudesert south of Brisbane in southern Queensland. Here, the famous 978th Signal Service Company operated under the Allied Intelligence Bureau (AIB) which was a select group of men who served as secret operatives for General Douglas MacArthur. This unit was first known as the 5217th Reconnaissance Battalion (Provisional), but later became the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion (Special) on November 20th, 1944. Technical Sergeant Leo Giron was dropped behind enemy lines by submarine nearly one (1) full year before any American Soldier would set foot on Philippine soil. It was his assignment to search out the enemy, extend lines of communication and secure vital weather data. He also obtained military information and was not to be detected by the enemy. Technical Sergeant Giron led a group of American and Filipino soldiers with the assistance of local organized guerrillas through the most hazardous conditions of WWII deep in the jungles of the Philippines. Many encounters were documented in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Because of his heroic actions during WWII, he received the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the combat infantryman badge (CIB) and most importantly a Letter of Commendation from the President of the United States of America. He contributed using the "Bolo knife" as a combat weapon for the men of the "Fighting Filipino" Regiments. After the war in 1968, he opened the BAHALA NA CLUB, in Tracy, California. His mission was to teach the martial art skills of Filipino stick fighting called Eskrima, Arnis and Kali. His vast knowledge and skills enabled him to later become a Grand Master known throughout the world. Upon hearing that he had passed away on May 21st, 2002 in Stockton, California, I attended his funeral and presented a certificate from the 1st & 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments and the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion (Special), U.S. Army, 1942-1946. This was indeed an honor to pay my last respects to him and to finally meet his Family. *** On Saturday, October 28th, 2013 at 10:00 am, a street in French Camp, California, was dedicated in his honor. This was a very memorable event for the entire martial arts and Stockton communities. LAGING UNA" - "ALWAYS FIRST" "SULUNG" - "FORWARD" "BAHALA NA!" - "COME WHAT MAY!" "IN HONOR OF OUR FATHERS!"
