Imagine this You are 18 and homeless with your 2-year old. You’ve been couch-surfing for months, have a car but no money for gas, are unable to afford to do laundry or buy shampoo, conditioner, tampons and basic hygiene items for you and your child. You’re trying to finish high school but cannot get there and are embarrassed because your clothes smell, your hair and body are dirty and you have no one to watch your child. You drop out of school and in order to make money just... to afford these basic necessities, you start selling your body. You don’t know what else to do. You’re feeling hopeless and desperate for help. You are 15 years old and in foster care. You’re on your 5th foster home, feel unloved and have never had any real guidance or anyone you can trust. A boy comes along and shows you attention and for once, you feel wanted. He tells you he loves you and you have sex with him. A few months later, you find out you’re pregnant. That boy who you thought loved you has already disappeared from your life. Your foster parents are angry with you and there is no way you can give a baby a stable, loving home. You’re scared, anxious and desperate for help. These situations may seem extreme but they are just a few of the realities our clients face. Every DAY, we receive phone calls from young adults in these exact situations. Stressed. Overwhelmed. Hopeless. Scared. Anxious. Desperate. The items and basic necessities most of us take for granted are the very things our clients are praying for the most. Help us continue to impact our community in a lasting way. These childrens’ futures are in our hands. 2022 marks our 25th year serving young moms, dads and babies in our area. At Chicks in Crisis, we help these young parents ease their anxiety and desperation by providing diapers, wipes, formula, hygiene and other items every 30 days as long as they stay in school and maintain family size. However, we are not like other organizations; we do not simply hand out items and wave goodbye. We’re so much more than that. We act as mentors and give them guidance and love. We do our best to keep them on the right track so they can become self-sufficient adults. We wrap these young moms and dads in our arms and we help them succeed. We give them the support they’ve never received. And, for our birth mothers who choose adoption, they become part of our forever family. We never give up on them. To give you a comparison, in 2019, we distributed 144,347 and that was a 15% increase from 2018. To say that the need is great is an understatement.
