Wrap up your residency interviews like a boss! By the time all 4th year podiatry students descend on Frisco, Texas for residency interviews (albeit, this year interviews are being held online), most students will have a very similar knowledge base. So, how do you stand out as a residency applicant? It’s not just WHAT you say, it’s HOW you say it. The delivery of a response is what sets two students apart who know the same material. Much like giving a present, it’s the p...ackaging and wrapping of the present that gives you a first impression of what lies underneath. Try to carefully craft thought-out answers to each question by explaining not only what you would do, but WHY you would do it. Residency educators would much rather know your thought process to see if you are trainable than know you got the answer correct because you memorized it. Try to end a case work-up by summarizing your evaluation of the patient (this shows your fund of knowledge) and potential management of the presented scenario (this shows your critical thinking skills). A few other tips during residency interviews: 1. Take a deep breath before you respond. 2. Speak slowly and clearly. 3. If you don’t know the answer, it’s okay to say I don’t know. (Try to look it up before your next interview!) 4. If you need to buy some time to think of an answer but don’t want to sit in silence, a good strategy is to repeat the question slowly as you try to answer the question. 5. Thank each interviewer at the conclusion of the interview. 6. Be yourself! Do you have any tips for residency interviews? Comment them below! Or tag an account that you think would have great advice to help students nail their interview! #APMA #apmaresidencyready #residency #residencyprogram #residencyinterviews #residencymatch #casprcrip #casprcripcrew #thematch
