I’d like to introduce #USMC veteran Ray Underwood. Corporal E4, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, FMF West Pac 1968-1969 -It was the summer of 1968 in #oceansidecalifornia. Ray and his buddy decided to run into town and get tattooed. It seemed like the right time since they both were getting shipped out to Vietnam the next morning. Ray says he knew exactly what tattoo he wanted. The Classic bulldog with #usmc. Ray can’t remember the exact artists name who d...id the tattoo. We assume It could have been William buzz Claydon or Tahiti Maurice lynch. Both Tattoo legends & heavy hitters of the oceanside tattoo scene during the Vietnam war. The bulldog Ray chose was off an original #ralphjohnstone sheet that was left at the arcade after Johnstone’s tenure in Oceanside ca. The original sheet now hangs at the world famous @mastertattoo1949 in Downtown san diego ca. Here we have WW2 veteran James Richard McCoy. born April 26th 1925 in san diego ca. James got his first tattoo at the arcade in 1944 before heading off to fight over seas..The same sheet still hangs strong by the front door and it’s designs are still being tattooed to this day, even after 76 years.. Over the years Ive tried hard to document as many of these old timers tattoos as i can..To hear their stories about their time roaming around downtown oceanside during the war years and the experiences at the arcade are magical.
