Orange Coast College Symphony 01.11.2020

It was so incredibly refreshing to see many of the OCC Symphony musicians on Zoom meeting last night! I think it was absolutely great to exchange the latest news and share our thoughts, hopes, and concerns about the recent, current, and future events. Please see a screenshot of our Zoom session included in this post. We have decided that we will have one more online meeting at the end of the Spring semester to exchange the news and set the plans for the Fall 2020 semester. I will communicate the details of the upcoming Zoom meeting additionally. Stay tuned!

The OCC Symphony will present a unique concert of music from Broadway musicals and songs which one will not likely hear in Orange County but anywhere else in the world. For this concert, the OCC Symphony partners with Michael Miller, the largest collector of broadway sheet music in the US. The Orange County audiences will be able to hear orchestral medleys and songs from classic American musicals of the 1920s. You will hear famous tunes from such Broadway hits of the first h...alf of the 20th century as Jerome Kern's "Show Boat" (1927), George Gershwin's "The Song of the Flame" (1925), Cole Porter's "Fifty Million Frenchman" (1929) and more, in the fabulous orchestrations for a full symphony orchestra. These orchestrations are so rare that some of them are not available for rent anywhere in the world! This concert will also feature two OCC vocal students, Victoria Pau and Wendi Regalado, who will sing famous Richard Roger's "My Heart Stood Still" (1927) and Victor Herbert's "Kiss Me Again" (1905) songs respectively. Dr. Michael Miller, the famous US and LA collector of Broadway sheet music as well as a professor of mathematics at UCLA, will join the OCC Symphony music director Dr. Maxim Kuzin on stage to talk about the Broadway music and his extensive and unique collection of sheet music, recordings, and books. It will be a truly memorable and unique evening of Broadway orchestral music and songs presented by the Orange Coast College Symphony, their music director Dr. Maxim Kuzin, as well as two OCC vocal department students and Dr. Michael Miller. Please join us for this rare treat!

On November 9, the OCC Symphony is going to present the fall 2019 program entitled "Great and Rare Works" comprised of works by Haydn, Rossini, and Rameau. We will do a very rare overture by Rossini to opera Tancredi (although originally it was written for an opera "La pietra del paragone"). It was very much in the tradition of Rossini to borrow overtures from his own earlier operas, if the need was. Haydn's Symphony #100 has a subtitle "Military" and is full of unconvention...al events in the music for that time. A trumpet solo that delivers a military signal in the second movement and the use of a bass drum, triangle, and cymbals in addition to timpani in the second movement and in the finale. All these features set this symphony apart in Haydn's heritage of more than 100 works for this genre. The OCC Symphony will conclude the program with a rare treat of an arrangement for orchestra a French composer Rameau's Ballet Suite. This piece, arranged by a Felix Mottl, a famous Austrian conductor and composer of the second half of the 19th century, delivers the best of the baroque style music in the more familiar setting of modern orchestral instruments. The OCC Symphony musicians are super excited to bring these GREAT AND RARE WORKS to the Orange County audiences in the majestic space of the Robert B. Moore Theater!
